Mitsubishi announced today that it will unveil the production version of its Lancer Sportback and Lancer Sportback Ralliart at the Paris Motor Show in early October. The Lancer Sportback is just what it sounds like, a five-door hatchback version of the recently redesigned Lancer model that's on sale around the world. Mitsubishi already revealed in its latest global business report that it would be selling the Lancer Sportback in the U.S. as well, but the only time frame given was sometime after the introduction of the Evo X, which is already on sale here.

In Europe, the Lancer Sportback will be powered by a 1.5L or 1.8L four-cylinder, or a 2.0L turbodiesel, while the Sportback Ralliart will feature a turbocharged 2.0L MIVEC engine producing 237 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque that's mated to Mitsubishi's Twin-Clutch SST transmission. It will also feature an Active Center Differential to help send torque to the wheels that can use it, as well as two-piston front brake calipers. Sounds like the same setup we saw on the U.S. version of the Lancer Ralliart sedan that debuted at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January. We were particularly smitten with that car, so adding some more interior cubes and a fifth door should only serve to increase our anticipation for Paris.

not that it's that difficult to be hotter than the new Impreza...

This is where I believe the Sportback becomes a better buy than the WRX.

Hopefully Subaru's "Baby STi" will bridge the gap and win the battle. Hopefully it will be able to compete on price as well.

I'd take a new STi over a new EVO X.

I think I would too. But if it were between the Sportback and the WRX I'm not certain which way I'd go.

Lex you are so 180 now. You used to get so fired up if somebody said something bad about Mitsu...guess the company/dealership burned you pretty bad. Sad. :(

I think there are alot of misconceptions about me. First and foremost, I am a car guy, not a Mitsu guy. I am very involved in the Mitsu community and most of my tuning experience has been on that platform, but that doesn't mean that I can't appreciate other cars. The truth is that I appreciate most any turboed car. Anything that's AWD, turbo, not a Ford, gets my vote.

What I hate amongst all (your reference to me getting fired up) is when someone who educates themselves only by reading car forums, begins to talk about Mitsubishi's "unreliability" or "crankwalk" etc, without ANY experience. It really grinds my gears. I think that they are one of the most reliable/potent platforms FTW, and I can back that up with tangible proof, not interweb "hearsay". One of the reasons why I appreciate DCAWD, and keep coming back here, is because almost everyone here has a Subaru. Hopefully, by hearing you wackadoos talk about TMICs and horizontally-opposed engines, I will educate myself, so that when that ignorant DSMtalk noob posts about how Subarus suck, I can kick some science FTW, TIA.

Hmm...just confusing after you posted this back in Jan:

I guess what it should say is:
"I am a diehard car guy, who prefers Mitsu, but appreciates most others"

Fixed :)

It's (relatively) official, the Lancer Sportback is coming to the U.S. in GTS and Ralliart trim:
AutoBlog wrote:Any chance we get to grill a Mitsubishi PR person about the 2009 Lancer Sportback, our questioning inevitably centers on whether the five-door will be packing the Lancer Ralliart's turbocharged, all-wheel-drivetrain. At the New York Auto Show, we were told that the Sportback would "probably" carry the Ralliart's 237-hp, turbocharged inline-four and Evo IX-derived AWD system, but nobody from Mitsubishi would confirmed it. Some snooping at the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) website reveals that Mitsubishi has already filed with the Feds for three different drivetrains for the 2009 hatch, including the GTS' 2.4-liter four-pot attached to either a CVT or five-speed manual, and a 2.0-liter DOHC turbo equipped with an "Automatic (S6)." The automatic in question is almost assuredly the six-speed twin-clutch (TC-SST) gearbox available on the Ralliart. For those of you unable to get around the recently redesigned 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX hatch's shape, a credible contender has arrived, and it should be hitting dealers this spring.
