PTUNING: Project RedLine Time Attack tC (Ver 2.0)

Post by MrC@ptuning.com »

Sorry we haven't been on here for a while but as you know we've been busy working on our Turbo tC for this year's time attack event. We're finally releasing some pics of our turbocharged Time Attack tC which we will be running in the '08 Redline TA season. Unfortunately, we are a bit behind schedule due to increasing servicing commitments (servicing our customer's cars are always first priority). Our tC is still a work in progress, but once finished, it will be used as a test bed for this prototype turbo system (race only version) along with all other future performance products.

Our tC will also be running our recently released off-the-shelf PTUNING 3" Turbo-Back Exhaust System. We are still waiting for the completion of our custom radiator as well as a full dry-sump oiling system. Our complete fuel system along with surge tank (aka swirl pot) should be finished pretty soon too. We are planning to dyno the car first with the stock 1st gen 2AZ-FE motor. Eventually, we will be dropping in our fully built 1st gen long block and eventually also testing out our built 2nd gen 2AZ-FE long block. As you can see we custom made everything that's why this is project is taking so long.

Here's a few pictures of our custom racing radiator that we finally got in today. The radiator was built to our spec by the famous racing radiator builder Ron Davis Racing. The radiator is lower but wider than the factory radiator. The frontal surface area is actually larger than the factory unit. The core is almost 6 times the thickness of the factory unit.

Here's a few pics of the progress on our custom roll cage that will meet both NASA and SCCA guide lines. Although we only need to meet the lesser stringent guideline for NASA to compete in the Red Line Time Attack events.

We'll take more pics once the roll cage is near completion. We hope you guys can make it out to the RT event again this year at summit points.

Agreed that is one beautiful car! I like the engine work a lot, much cleaner than any subaru i've seen ;0 ( But not much can be avoided given the boxer engine )

That is some of the best work I have seen done, it is a work of art! I can't wait to see what she puts down!

BTW, how big is that turbo?

Thanks for all the positive feedback. The turbo is a Garrett GT30R. We'll also run the GT35R on the faster course like VIR if for some reason the GT30R is not enough for the competition.

How do you prevent turbo lag from hurting you with a 30R or larger?

The answer is 2.4 liter (96mm stroke) and a lot of dyno time to optimizing timing everywhere. Everything is in place to maximize the full potential of the GT30R (GT3076R) (tubular equal length header with a true merge collector--we try to design the header-style manifold with minimal bends and keeping the runner as short as possible but still maintaining an equal-length setup, Full 3" mandrel-bent turbo-back exhaust). There's still a lot to be done; we will eventually test out our turbo-spec camshafts as well as our ported head with oversize valves and upgraded valvetrain. If need be, we can always look into implementing an anti-lag setup, but that's going to kill the life of the turbo and manifold, plus we'll need to run a standalone setup to make it work. Everything looks good on paper but we won't know what the final setup will be until we get the car on the dyno and on the track. We can only speculate at this time but turbo lag should not be an issue on this setup with the GT30R. We still have a lot of testing and development. Our ultimate goal is to eventually compete in the unlimited class with everything we learn from the modify class setup. We would like to tune and run this car with 93 octane and possibly 100 octane unleaded (for safety, especially on hot days). We will also try to test a water/methanol setup if time permits.

With the GT30-size turbo, we have a 9 variations that we can play with depending on if we want to faster spoolup or if we need more top end power:

More top end power (the tighter the turbine housing, the faster the spoolup, at the expense of top end power)
GT3076R: turbine housing A/R: .63 .82 1.06

Quicker spoolup than the GT3076R
GT3071R: turbine housing A/R: .63 .82 1.06

Even more top end power than the GT3076, but slower spoolup
GT3082R: turbine housing A/R: .63 .82 1.06

Knock on wood, but of all the turbo we've seen come into our shop, the off the shelf garrett turbo is the most reliable even though it's expensive, with turbonetics turbo being at the bottom of the list, along with all those mismatch frankenstein turbos.

Can you put compressed air tanks in it so that it still sounds like the old Tc Jet on the straights? That new exhaust sure looks pretty, but I am going to miss the whooshing sound.

it sounded so undeniably awesome "whooshing" around summit point last year, especially in contrast to every other time attack car out there.

With the BOV and boost controller that they are running, I think the boos flutter and associated bird sounds will not be heard. Well, until they get their anti-lag going...

I may just be talking out my ass here, but it looks to me like the hot side sort of coddles the oil pan. I see the oil cooler up front, but with a wet sump, you're still going to have oil pooling in the bottom that's hot -- really hot. Am I missing something there? I would imagine you lose some viscosity and/or oil life with that positioning. Have you thought about dry sumping it or adding baffling to the oil pan or something? At least with baffles, it wouldn't all be pooling in one spot.

On the other hand, it's a perfectly reasonable solution to just say "exert one lateral gee on the car every minute or so." :)

edit: I guess after reading instead of staring at the pretty pictures, I see that a dry sump is on the way.

have you noticed where the exhaust manifold on a Subaru flat four runs? I didn't like it when I first dropped the undertray on the WRX and had a look, but packaging is what it is. with the large oil cooler and frequent changes I would guess that the tC shouldn't have any issues.

It's been over a month since we started on the roll cage but after many late-nighters, we're finally finished with the cage and it's ready for paint. Here's the updated pics of the cage:

Here's a few pics of our next project--drysump oiling system. We designed the drive mandrel to utilize three of the six counter-sunk mounting bolts on the ATI super damper. We had one made out of billet steel as well as billet aluminum. But the aluminum piece which we will probably use, should be plenty strong for this application. Now we need to design a billet aluminum mounting bracket for the drysump oil pump to bolt into the factory A/C compressor location.
