Hey guys i was just checking out mods for my 02 wrx and i am really interested in getting a front mount intercooler kit! I see all of the ones around for $1000 + for perrin, or aps, etc... But does anybody know if there are any better deals out there that will perform just as well for less dollar? Any recommendations would be great, thanks... :drool:

I scored one of these on the cheap back when they first introduced them. I'd check out the private for sale classifieds on NASIOC as they come up from time to time.

gl!

I recommend you don't go with a FMIC unless you have a large aftermarket turbo or just like lag. :wink:

^^^ Yep! The SS Auto. FMIC perform well and are cheap.... but they will give you more lag.

The SSA FMIC will certainly work however some of the more expensive models MIGHT have a better cooling core from what I've read/heard.

There are multiple Turbo XS FMIC's on NASIOC right now for around 800 brand new. There is someone in NOVA trying to dump his for quick needed cash for 800 right now on there.

I know I should probably keep my mouth shut but I have to ask, Why do you want a front mount? Are hoping to make more power? Do you just like the look? I'll start in on my standard rant on FMICs and let others come in and defend them.

1. They're significantly more expensive than a big TMIC.
2. They're more difficult to install.
3. They're not necessary for any turbo up to say the size of an FPGreen.
4. Unless well hidden, they destroy stealth factor.

I'll keep the rant short and stay off tubing, core sizes, effecientcy and the other arguable issues that may come up.

Truth. On a 2.0l motor, you're not helping unless you're using an FP Red or similar sized rotated turbo setup.

:plusone:

- 4 hour install with someone who's done it before
- More lag
- Less stealth factor

Those being said the SSA TMIC is cheap (~200 shipped), and fits very well on at least my 2005 STI.

I like good deals and tinkering, so fer me, the FMIC was in the cards. I do not need it.

Just make sure you cut the right style of bumper for your kit...

That would be my overwhelming choice for anyone who is thinking of going with a larger IC.

Here is a quick run down of TMIC core sizes so you can get an idea:

Stock WRX: 16.25" x 6" x 3" = 292

STi: 18.5" x 7.25 x 3" = 402

TurboXS:
19 1/8" X 7 3/8" 4.5" = 634 cubic inches

APS:
20.07" x 7.5" x 4.5"
Volume=677

AVO:
16.25" x 7" x 4.5"
volume =511.875

Helix:
18.9" x 7.9" x 4" 600 ci

no-name SSautochrome brand:
20" x 7.5" x 4.5"
volume =675

TurboXS / SSautochrome FMIC:
28" X 9" X 3.5" = 882 ci

In the world of intercoolers Size Matters. If all other things are equal a larger core is better than a smaller core, unless the larger core size is overkill for the turbo.
