H.264 is a pretty nice codec. I'm sure there are plenty of converters out there.

Also decent from my experience. Most of em are just frontends to ffmpeg anyway.

I've used VirtualDub and AutoGK(which is for DVD's) for a long time. For good compression, go DivX. For a little better compression and cross platform compat fo XviD

Eh these days h.264 is the standard for compression w/ quality but yeah if you are aiming for lower size divx will do that for ya.

Plus it depends on what you are playing them back on. Xvid can play back on just about anything, but H.264 is hellish on your CPU.... unless you get a codec for GPU decoding

unfortunately everyone in my car club has not recieved technology yet, so It will be divx AVI and then converted to WMV...

QFT
This is why I don't like H.264 - it's faaaar too CPU-intensive. I would go with either Divx or Xvid. The added benefit of Divx is that some set-top DVD players can decode those files.

QFT. Emphasis on "modern." If it'll run (damn well mind you!) on something as lowly as an apple tv.... then it
has to be able to run on someone's computer.
I can see A's as well as J's points... but I'm not concerned as to how CPU/GPU intensive or inefficient it might be. If I'm going to go through the effort of converting to digital, I want teh quality to roxx0r my b0xxorz.
Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks!

H.264 is the wave of the future for internet video. Get on the bandwagon or get left behind.
I went to Adobe MAX 2007 this year and every workshop there was pushing H.264 and pretty soon all high end video on the web will be in this format. It supports transparency, and high def in considerably small file sizes (for what you're getting quality wise).
All of the video I rip off my vid camera gets compressed to H.264.
Demo of the codec @ 700KB/s here:

Yeah that's my experience in the 'industry' as well. ( Streaming Operations )
