Data Recovery?

Has anyone used someone local for platter based HDD recovery? My boss dropped the external drive that I had used to make an image of his system and now it shows up in bios as a 0MB drive (incorrect geometry.) Can't even dd the sucker, doesn't show up in a dmesg either.
Any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I know Geek Squad can do data recovery, but its super expensive. All they do is ship it out to a third party though.

we've sent out platters to a vendor, but I don't have the info at hand. I can do some digging if you like but the place isn't local and IS expensive.

I found someone local:
Disk Doctors.
They have their own clean room and will evaluate the drive for free before making a quote. Sounds pretty legit for future work.
