Spy Shots: 2008 Impreza STI on the road

Finally, pictures of the new Subaru Impreza STI that have not been generated by a computer. Amateur shots taken on a public road in Japan clearly show the traditional enlarged hood scoop, butcher flared arches and two more exhaust pipes than found on the WRX. Those grey alloys would certainly be a departure from STI norm as well, should they make it to the stand at October's Tokyo Motor Show.
The right-hand-drive car spotted is almost certainly destined for the Japan domestic market and as such should be powered by a 1994cc EJ20 boxer rather than the torquier, but less peaky, 2.5-liter lump that will be fitted to STIs for export.

Yeah, not feeling it. Too domesticated and dull...maybe the aftermarket can do something for it.

I've noticed people gradually starting to warm up to it. It's different.. but I don't know. I cannot verify that it's the actual STi since subaru is quite tight-lipped about it. Rest assured I'll get plenty of pics for you guys at SEMA

Yeah I hated it at first, but the hatch design is growing on me. Honestly if it performs better... that's what counts right?

Still not liking the tail lights, but otherwise I like it.

yeah... pretty soon people are going to have to buy aftermarket red taillights for all their new cars. I know I'll probably be one of them when the time comes

I've seen nothing so far that changes my opinion of the design. if anything these spy shots are a step back from the WRC concept shown in Frankfurt. glad some people like it, I'm just not one of them.

Maybe a full black stealth version like that test mule on the Nurburgring might change my mind some on how I feel about it. I will just have to wait and see for the final product.

more spy shots from Autoblog
Autoblog wrote:Though Subaru engineers took careful measures to ensure their Impreza WRX STi tester wasn't spotted en route to the Nurburgring or at the track's staging area, eventually the car cover had to come off. It appears Subaru engineers were forced to unveil the production body of the new STi in order to test how the final form affects cooling. Though we just showed you this official teaser shot of the STi, these spy shots show the car outside in perfect light where every detail of the new design is cleary visible. Aside from some black tape, the blue STi underneath is practically naked. Note what appear to be air extractor vents or intake scoops on the sides of the front bumper, a design element we weren't entirely aware of before. We can also clearly see the rear wing now, which is less ostentatious than we were hoping. The STi has always been known for sporting an obnoxious rear wing, but it looks like that tradition will end with the 2008 model. KGP Photography took shots of the STi from nearly every angle, all of which can be viewed in our high-res gallery.

you own an STi, you don't need a lotto ticket to afford one. or did I miss the point?
don't mind me, I'm upset that the only Impreza that doesn't make me

is too expensive for me to afford.

Still not sold. Sorry! Yes it does look better than the WRX, I'll give it that. But then again, that's not saying much.

from what I hear these are expected to climb towards the $40k price range.

Near 40K? Epic failure? For ~40K i'd rather have the G37.

It's not confirmed as of yet... but the new WRX is extremely expensive already. I'd rather have a cheaper interior and no sat-nav to save the money.
