At the HT meet yesterday someone was telling me about the Ceramic spray in a can for my downpipe. I can't remember the name of the stuff...goes to 1500 degress F.....anyone know the name of the stuff? THanks.

The $20 will be fine for a down pipe.

If you want even cheaper, look for VHT 1500.

Kyle used it on the Bosal downpipe I sold him and I was very impressed.

I used black satin on my headers as well as wrapped.
I used the spay on from speedway motors and cured them in a huge Bar-B-Q grill. I was impressed right from the get go. I was able to pull them out and never felt the heat from the headers. The grill reached nearly 600 degrees, yet the headers were cool to the touch within seconds of pulling them out. After I installed them, I ran the car around for about a 1/2 hour then brought it back put it back on the lift and looked for leaks and any other problems. I was able to touch the wrapped headers with my bare hands.

That being said, I recently helped install a bosal dp that had been coated with VDT 1500 and I was impressed with it's cooling effects as well. It was touchable just a short time after a short but spirited drive.

So are you recommending that everyone wrap first and then use black satin or will they just be fine w/ only the black satin?

The exhaust gas temps in headers regularly reach 1500+ degrees.
For that reason I used black satin and wrapped. In hind sight it was probably not nesessary to wrap.

Down pipe exhaust don't come near 1500 degrees, so coating and wrapping is massive overkill. Either would do nicely, but my recomendation would be to coat it with black satin. It will look nicer than wrap, and it will cool just as well, if not better!

If by some chance, black satin isn't available, and you must do it now, then I would recommend coating with VHT 1500. It works much better than I would have thought.

If neither of these is available, then wrap. Wrap from the bottom up. Less chance of condensation build-up.
