Rally School

Post by Cereb Daithi »

I plan on attending this next summer. I really think I could benefit from it. If anyone else is interested perhaps we could get something set up

I also plan to take a winter driving class while I'm there too.

pricey, yes.. but it's pretty a pretty damn valuable learning experience in a controlled environment, with borrowed cars, and guys that can instruct you

Sandy's been nagging me to take her to one in Florida for, well, as long as she's had the STI and for some time before, when it was still coming from the factory.

It's pretty much in the "vacation" category (and I'm not such a fan of FL), rather than the "jaunt off to the track this weekend." If you compare it to air fare and hotel in (for example) Hawaii, it's not so bad. But, it's not something you do every quarter.

To me... it's maddening not having this knowledge. I'm like a sponge and can't wait to learn new things. The thought of having some rally driving experience under my belt seems almost too good to pass up.

Ya, if it was 1-2k, I would think about it... but 4k? Ouch :(

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

$4k to learn a few things that might be applicable to real driving?

Does it sound cool? Hells yes!

Does it fit into my budget definition of cool? nope.

:(

Have fun and take lossa pics if/when you go. I'm sure it will be a good time.

I suppose it seems more valuable to me since I plan to get heavily into rallycross.

yeah, i'd be all over it if i was planning more than your local autocross/trackday stuff. and if i had 4k to blow on something uber cool that would leave me with nothing more than driving knowledge. hell yeah.
but damn. 4k

as a great woman (and driver for BMW) once said: "work on the driver, not the car." $4k would get you at least 6 HPDE weekends including brake pads and tires.
OK, i'll stop :deadhorse: now

What I saw Brian do on a 20 sec. AutoX course in my car highlighted just how much I need to learn to take advantage of what it is.

If only I could be as good as my car.

Lets put it this way... to be an excellent well educated driver AND have a very quick and well modded car.... it's going to cost money on both ends.

End of story.

Personally I'd rather focus on learning to be the best driver that I can be. I will always have time to buy more powerful cars.. but bad driving habits are tough to break. Better I get those worked out. I'd rather be a good driver first with a fast car second as opposed to the other way 'round.

The HPDE thing is definetly useful but won't help me too much with learning pendulum turns and spin/slide recovery.

My ultimate goal is:

Learn to drive well on slippery/loose surfaces and learn to recover from spins first.

Learn to drive on a track second.

and finally take those skills and put them to use in a car.
