Should have gotten a Wii. JOKE!
Sorry to hear. I guess it isn't just an easy replacement of the HD and just loading an install disc, huh?

Hmmm...I wonder it you can remove the hard drive and recover data on a PC? You know, hook it up to a spare EIDE connection?
Or are you hoping to not void your warranty?

*sigh* Then people ask me why I won't get an Xbox. Overheating, hard drive failures, and let's not forget the the infamous
red LEDs. Plus, I've never played a game for it that I really liked.

In a strange turn of events.. things seem to be working fine now... lets see how long it lasts...
I still plan on calling microsoft soon. I doubt the problem fixed itself

Well it died again after being on for a sustained period of time. It be heat related methinks... but it isn't particularly hot in the room or around the console and it's plenty ventilated.
However since I'm a mac user... I'm not surprised the PowerPC procs in the Xbox are crazy hot... the G5 sitting 3 feet away from the console is a monument to the term "space heater"

so far mine has been behaving. I really like my 360, but they aren't all that reliable. too bad Sony lost their minds...

I've seen these things in stores called InterCoolers sold by the 360's. Basically a set of 3 extra cooling fans that clip on to your 360. At first, I was very "whatever" to them. However, I'm starting to wonder if the thing actually does generate too much heat and if it'd be worth it to pick one of these things up. There's also a platform or something that your 360 can sit on that moves air through it as well. Dunno - just don't want my saved games to get lost!!!
edit: got facts on product name wrong.

Here's what I think about the Xbox.

the 360 has it's merritts:
great game selection
great online component
great graphics
large install base
ease of use
and it's weaknesses:
poor reliability record
loud operation
no HDMI
is an M$ product
all things considered (as long as it doesn't crap out) it gives me everything I want in a console. the Wii is a lot of fun but doesn't have the games I want to play or the horsepwoer to do it. so I own both for less than a PS3 or PC gaming rig.

Mine worked fine out of the box and I've always actually had good luck with M$ consoles.. but it looks like the luck finally ran out. Worst case scenario it's still under warranty. I'd rather just keep this one with all my save-games and achivement-points on it though..even if I can keep the harddrive with all the savegames, certain things are still tied to the console's memory.
I'm considering that "intercooler" system. I saw it a while back and sort of scoffed at it, but after this current wave of crashes (Which so far has only happened when i play Forza 2) I'm reconsidering. It seems a LOT of 360s have been breaking lately. I've seen countless threads where people buy forza 2 and start playing and their xbox dies. Don't necessarily think Forza 2 is killing our xboxes... but perhaps microsoft overlooked some potentially fatal flaw in the system (Wouldn't be the first time they did that. I'm looking at you Windows ME

)

Gabe - what do you mean that the 360 doesn't have HDMI? That's what I use on mine........
As for the InterCooler - dunno. I may swing up to Best Buy and have a look. Of course, once you start reading about them, interspersed with the posts you see about how it fixx0r3d the problems people were having then you see posts about how the InterCooler killed their 360's electrical system. Can't freaking win.

that sucks about the cooling. I am highly leery of MS products. Then again, my TiBook is burning a hole through my leg as we speak.

not all of us are
Elite
and my crappy TV is only capable of 1080i anyway...

Ohhhhh......oops. I thought the HDMI difference on the Elite was that it came with the cable - not that the other version full on didn't support it.
As for the 1080i thing, that's all my TV will do as well, but I just run the thing in 720p and it looks amazing. From what I've read, the differences are very subtle unless you've got a monster TV or something anyway.

After some more testing:
It's not the harddrive!
but something else is definetly fooked. I'm thinking the cd drive. It just crazy freezes up at random times

do you see an HDMI port on the back of your 360?

unless you have an Elite, you don't.
50 lashes, and hand over your GEEK card!

Yup...with an HDMI cable coming off it running to the back of my TV.

I do have an elite.

I like my geek card and want to keep it even though I've tried to give it away a couple of times. However, I will hand in my "reading" card as that's the one I didn't use when researching 360's before buying one. "it has a 120 gig HD and it's only 80 bucks more?" Sold. That's pretty much what my thought process was.

now your confusing me

so you do have a 360 Elite?
man, I gotta try this unemployment thing...
your TV has an HDMI port but doesn't do 1080p? that's interesting.

It's not for everyone. You have to have a keen sense for opportunities to do nothing with your day, an infallible ability to sleep in on mornings when you don't want to roll out of bed before 10, and an appreciation for sitting in coffee shops watching everyone else run about as if their days at work actually meant something.
Oh, and whores. Lots of whores. I never said that just because I don't have a job I don't have any income.

The TV tried 1080p once but whoever it was with didn't use enough lube. Kind of turned it off to 1080p from that point on.

geek wars... sheesh.
anyways apparently xbox says my warranty is up so i'm going to try to endorse my best-buy warranty. wee.
i think it's a proc or something.

Hehehe....no wars.

Just me with an over-abundance of caffeine at the time of publishing and a bit of snarktitude.
Sorry to hear about the processor. One of the things I made sure of when we got ours was that I picked up the Best Buy warranty with it. I usually shun the "extended service plans" but with something with the track record of oh ye hallowed 360 I figured it couldn't hurt. Hell, just the ability to sidestep the whole Microsoft repair BS is worth it if something happens.
I am, however, now stuck in "must find way to back up 360 hard drive" mode.

to the rescue?
