This is more or less a warning for anyone who hasn't already upgraded to OS 10.4.9 . I upgraded and lost the use of AirPort along with some other functionality. Ultimately, after doing some research, I found the upgrade caused problems on a lot of systems. Therefore I had to downgrade back to 10.4.8.

wish i woulda found out before i went to 10.4.9 . oh well i'm running ethernet and havent turned my airport on for a while now. no problems here.....yet..

Did I miss a link or something? I'm on 10.4.9 with my c2d macbook, our g4 powerbook, and our cd mini. No problems, and I think that runs the gamut of wireless hardware for us.

Which systems are affected?

(also weird for us because Sandy hasn't heard this at the store, either)

I don't know maybe it's just me. Anyhow, here's my situation:

Before the upgrade I was able to connect to my wireless network at home, sometimes it would hang but at least I could connect. Afterward, whenever I tried to connect it would just error out.

I have a D-Link router running WPA-TKIP. After looking into it, it seems a lot of people are having trouble connecting their MACs to WPA networks that aren't coming from AirPort Extreme boxes. Sometimes it'll connect but hang. Other times it won't connect at all.

I'll hold off on my comments about D-Stink networking hardware...

As far as .9 is concerned, I had read a few problems concerning the upgrade. Particularly machines not rebooting properly after the upgrade. There's a bunch of traffic at apple's support discussion page, as well as the osxhints forums.

Knock on wood, everything's been smooth sailing for me so far.

HAHA! I'm not a D-Link fan either but it came with the FiOS. Until just this very moment I haven't thought about going back to my Linksys because the D-Link has at least been serving its purpose.

Strange, it seems that almost all of the complaints are from people using D-Link routers. But I don't think it's a problem with the router itself because I have other computers including a Wii, PSP, and an Xbox that have been using the connection with no problem. Could it be that Apple and D-Link just don't play well together?

Just out of morbid curiosity, you use WPA because you don't want people to see your traffic, or because you don't want them on the network? I just use MAC acls and add each machine as it shows up. One wap holds the acls, and the subsequent waps use WDS to propagate traffic from the main wap.

I've found encryption to kinda be a pain in the ass in general (such as different manufacturers having different opinions on how WPA or WEP works).

I took a while to answer this because I want make sure I do so thoroughly. Plus, I don't post a lot on weekends (I do try to have something that resembles a life).

I would use MAC address filtering but it's too much of a pain because 1)every time someone brings over a laptop I have to add it to the list. It's much easier just to give them my WPA passphrase (and yes I use phrases and not words) then to have to figure out what their MAC address is, logging into to the router, and adding them. Also, 2) it can too easily be spoofed by any script kiddie with wardriving software. Which is why I both hide my SSID to keep it from accidentally being stumbled upon and use WPA, so if I've got someone outside sniffing packets they'll more than likely try to find a less secure network than mine.

In my research of this problem it seems if I go down to WEP (which isn't happening) it will start working or if I go up to WPA2 it may work. Though, I'm pretty sure my D-Link doesn't do WPA2. Either way, I think the problem lies not with the router but with AirPort not being able to dynamically update the TKIP key (not to be confused with the passphrase). Possibly, this is why it would hang in OS 10.4.8, each time the key would change AirPort would lose its connection and I would have to reconnect. Now, with 10.4.9, its not connecting at all.

I've heard in the past that Apples have had problems connecting to WPA encrypted networks and that the problems had supposedly been fixed in the newer OS's but only for the AirPort extreme. As such, anyone running off of a non-Apple router was still left in the dark.

Strange mine came w/ a generic brand that isn't D-Link...and I am grateful.

Apple finally released an Airport update that suppose to increase compatibility with third party WPA & WPA2 access points. I've already installed it and I'll test it out when I get home. I'll let you know how it goes.

The update works. I once again have WPA inn@rwebs!
