$70 isn't too expensive, but a few members have access to one and you can also borrow them from Autozone (probably other auto parts stores too). an Access Port will read codes too.

I have an actron scanner (the step-up from the little one) and I have it with me most of the time.

Ok, I had no idea they were ubiquitous. I will refrain from purchasing one...
