Grabbed the AVIC-D3 from powersellernyc ( good reviews/ratings ) for $850 shipped. Got the $30 IPod cable from best buy, and the XM control unit for $100 as well. Got the XM unit in the trunk, need a better way to mount it though as it is currently double side taped under the carpet. Any suggestions? ( 05 STI ).

fab up some brackets and mount it under the rear shelf. shouldn't matter which way you mount it, unlike an amp. my room mate's is hidden inside the dash in his tC. then we just ran the cable to the GPS and XM antenna to the passenger corner of the dash inside the car. works great and you can't see it from outside.
how do you like the D3 so far?

is it not the same as the D2? you have to pull an unused pin and re-pin it in the harness. I can't remember the specifics but it's out there on the interw3bs, and it works for the D2.

Looks cool! The screen's a bit smaller than the D2 but then again I don't intent to do a whole lot of video playing in the

car. Plus, it's already on ebay for $800! Hrmm... decisions.

I did the unused pin thing and it didn't work

Maybe I did not use a good
enough ground, but I thought the dang head unit itself would be good.
Oh well, not like it's hard to take apart the dash anyway ;0

I'm hearing rumors now-a-days that these head units are combining techniques to determine if the car's in park - not just checking the parking brake.
For example - they may check the GPS data to determine if your car is in motion. If so, then it blocks the video from playing on the screen. One way to get around this is to use the video out feed (that would normally feed additional monitors in the car) and route it to the rear camera IN jacks. Assuming you don't also have a rear camera installed.

no, the head unit itself is not a good ground. reground it to a chassis ground point and give it another try.
