Replace the STi scoop

Post by Cereb Daithi »

Decided the STi scoop has got to go. Looking for a good looking reverse scoop or some other option. something non-intrustive, more low-profile. it's only serving as ventilation so there is no need to have the gaping maw sucking in massive amounts of air. any suggestions?

an RS hood? the WRX scoop is much smaller and doesn't flap in the wind like the STi. there are a lot of "extractor" inserts but most of them are very in-your-face style. once saw a flush grill that looked a little like the EVO hood. it was pretty sweet but the guy had custom made it at the CNC shop he worked for, so no production model of that one. :?

The Aqua reverse hood scoop is probably a little too loud for you, right?

not sure what it looks like. if you could link me it'd be appreciated. i'll take anything that doesnt look hideous. i am hoping to get something CF simply because I dont know if i have enough to buy botht he scoop and have it painted with my current lack of spending money... and unpainted CF can be accecptable to look at unlike unpainted fiberglass.

It's not a functional opening so there is no use in buying expensive aerodynamic scoops designed to suck in the most air. Just some nice insert to replace the scoop.

Take a look at the bottom items on this page:

It's not the Aqua one, but it looks like a knock off :)

i found a chargespeed one. cant find a price on it though.

the more i look at the PD the more i want it. i see the CW on a bunch of cars on Nasioc... but rarely the PD.

i like the chargespeed one but i have a feeling it'll be very expensive. and it'd be more of something i'd get with the matching hood with the other similar vents (you can sorta see it in the pic)

local guy is going to sell this style to me for $130.

Image

not quite the unique PD style that i wanted.... but it's painted PSM to match the car.. so $130 painted vs. $300 CF unpainted.... it's not worth more than double just for a more unique vent in my mind.

I'd certainly take the painted one for $130.
While not as stealthy as I think the PD might be, that is just a huge savings, and I definitely prefer the painted to the bare carbon fiber.

By the way. I sat and talked with the guy for about an hour after the sale. Do any of you remember that silver STi with the old Legacy wing on it? Well the reverse scoop from that car is now on mine. It's the same guy. He sold his STi for a BMW which is being shipped over right now. (Not sure which one)

You know, I don't intend to be a dick about it, honest. I think what's happening is that I learned a lot of what I know (okay, probably more than 90%) about cars and racing from a guy who owns a Shelby GT350 which he bought new. When I was in school, he was effectively retired, teaching auto because he loved to. So I guess the guy has to be in his late 70s now. Anyways, so all the terminology (including the term "chin spook") I ever learned, I learned from a guy who was at least a generation or two behind the current (I bought the Z to "compete" in the San Diego street racing scene of 1995-1998).

So my vernacular is going to be a little different. I wasn't correcting you (or maybe I was, I didn't mean to be), I was just trying to understand what you were saying. In hindsight, it's kind of weird to realize that I have a vocabulary that's pretty different than most of the people my age.

I promise I'm not a hair splitting jerk.
