Blow off Valve

Post by Libra Monkee »

I need a lesson. The guy who I'm getting the UTEC from is also offering a TurboXS RFL blow off valve for an additional 175 bucks. Now I don't much about blow off valves beyond that they're supposed to help the turbo (in some way), in the wrong setup they can compromise driveability or cause turbo lag, and the noise they make can attract cops. :D

Can anyone help shed a little light on what these things actually do and what gains and/ or losses I can expect iffing I should get the BOV also?

^^Wise words, Chuck!...well unless you are going to be running a 2.8L motor w/ a GT42R turbo pushing 500WHP+, then I would recommend an atmospheric BOV.

:plusone: to what C man said! They are only good for noise and attracting po-po's!

On a more technical note:
The stock BOV is good to around 21PSI, after that it starts to leak. The stock turbo (VF39 in your case) is WAY out of it's efficiency range at those boost levels, so I doubt you'll ever see them unless it's by mistake or with water injection. When you upgrade your turbo, if you plan on running more than 21PSI, then you might consider upgrading the BOV. By that time, you'll probably have switched over to a FMIC anyway ;)

BOVs are bad for us Scoobys. while I do like the sound of an BOV I'm not sure I could live with it on a daily basis. and there is a reason BOVs are referred to as a "pig whistle" on nabisco...
