Phoenix Motorcars has made an all-electric SUV due out in Spring of next year. To me it looks like a Baja. Anyhow this thing plugs into an ordinary wall outlet (unlike the electric cars of old), can do 0-60 in under 10secs., has a top speed of about 110 mph, and can go for about 250 miles on one charge.

see this is what frustrates me.. we have electric cars that can go fast and for a long time on the juice that have stored. we have alternative fuel sources like that hydrogen based fuel and such that can produce enough power to light half a neighborhood..... yet we probably wont see those two technology's together on the consumer market for what... another 10-15 years?

dont get me wrong i loves me the boxer engine.. but gas is annoying.... however also... lets be realistic here... someone is gona figure out how to profit off any new fuel source and we are going to have to pay through the nose for it some way some how.. thats just how the world operates. cheap/free fuel is a pipe dream.

im interested to see what electric cars do to the automotive enthusiast world... aftermarket guys will be trying to make their cars QUIETER instead of louder haha. you'll see guys removing all unnecessary electrical components, putting in aftermarket battery packs, probably install high-flow power-packs to give an extra boost of speed with upgraded "fuses" and such... it's a whole new age

electric cars won't dominate the market until opec finds a way to get a cut of the action.

the idea of cheap/free fuel usually runs into the first law of thermodynamics.

and I don't think anybody has come up with an electric car that will both go fast AND go for a long time. the 0 - 60 time and the range quoted aren't done on the same charge I can almost guarantee.

forgetting about the tesla roadster's speed and the GM Hywire's hydrogen/seawater based fuel?

oh and yeah im sure flooring it will dramatically cut your travel-time for a full-electric car

If you ever want painful, watch "Who Killed the Electric Car?" The technology for the GM EV-1 was developed over 10 years ago and then they actively destroyed the program. And now they are talking about coming out w/ a "plug-in hybrid" that won't be available for another 3 years or more. BS!!! Sorry, I'll shut up now and continue to collecting my pennies for a Tesla...

yeah as long as crude oil is still around the billionaires that control the industry (maybe trillionaires? haha) will actively destroy or at least actively and dramtically hinder progress in the field. the engines and fuel havent really changed much since the turn of last century... they arent about to let it change now that a few people are concerned with environmental saftey

Considering the logistics, electric cars like this one shouldn't be expected to go long distances. Seeing as how charging stations aren't as common as gas stations, when you get low on power where would you to recharge th battery.

Even if you find a charging station it says the car takes 6 to 7 hours to completely recharge. So approximately every 250 miles you'd have to stop for seven hours to let the car charge.

However this would make an excellent daily driver... if you have a house with a garage. Or a least a really long extension cord.

but back to reality: show me real world number for the Tesla and the Hywire. amazing claims require amazing proof. I want alternative fuel to work as much as anyone, but so far they haven't and probably won't in the near future. that's not to say we shouldn't keep researching.

haha i'm too lazy to even do the research. i do remeber hearing about the 50mpg carb. and btw the hywire was the car that ran on seawater... was that the one that was purchased and destroyed?

haha either way i dont feel like putting any more research into something that i will probably have nothing to do with for most my life, if ever.

the 50 mpg carburetor and the water car are old myths, circulated LONG before "teh series of tubes" was even thought of.

I don't know if any of the pre-order Teslas have been delivered yet. That's probably when the real numbers will start coming out. The guy who created the EV-1 batteries sold it to GM, who then sold it to an oil company and it's never been seen since. Mazda has donated some hydrogen RX-8s to the Japanese government and next year, BMW is bringing out a hydrogen 7 series car, that should be interesting. If I hadn't needed a car ASAP, I was really considering a hybrid, but the waitlists were insane in 2003.

hydrogen presents it's own problems. the energy density issue will be difficult to overcome, as will convincing those little hydrogen atoms to part ways with oxygen or what ever else they've bonded to...

I do believe that oil companies don't care for alternative fuels. I do NOT believe that they're formed a cabal that is systematically quashing any and all amazing developments that would allow everybody to drive on banana peels. another big company would build the banana car and make a fortune off of it. the all mighty dollar works in many ways...
