My new roommates and I have a cable connection. Would someone here be willing to come set-up the wireless router for me? I followed the instructions online (original packaging long gone) but was unable to figure it out.

It's a Linksys that my roommate had. I'm not even entirely sure that it's the right powercord for the thing.

I'm dealing with some POS Windows-based laptop (averatec or something??) that doesn't have a wireless card, and my beautiful titanium Powerbook. Hooking directly by cable with either computer does not result in the desired results that the Linksys site claims (i.e. when I enter the router's default address, the set-up page does not pull up).

you might not be using the correct gateway ip. connect your machine with a cat5 cable to the router and run an ipconfig /all command. the gateway ip that shows up is what you need to type into the address field to access the web-based config page. this is all assuming that the router is using the right power cord, it's set up for dhcp (as is your computer's nic), and all is hunky dory (ie - fluffeh bunnehs and rainbows and all that good shit).

Already tried that, but the Gateway was not listed

I know my own computer is set up for DHCP, but I cannot vouch for the PC nor the router itself...

Yesterday my roommate and I were yelling at each other:

Her: "How do we get wireless?"
Me: "We set up the wireless router."
Her: "Ok, but who do we pay for it?"
Me: "We don't pay anyone, what are you talking about?"
Her: "Then where does it come from?"
Me: ::shaking the router at her::

Do you see what I'm dealing with?

why not reset the router and try the default ip again?

it's gotta be 192.168.0.1 or 1.1... maybe 1.10?

Yup, tried resetting already too. I attempted with 192.168.1.1 as per the website, but I will try with the other two just in case.

I'm not completely computer illiterate, I just haven't ever dealt with wireless before, and don't know how to go about it.

Yeah, all Linksys default to this: 192.168.1.1 AFAIK.

Default username is usually left blank.
Default password is usually: admin

Yeah, make sure all wired LAN PCs are setup for DHCP and that the router/switch is set up for DHCP as well...unless you want to setup static IP addresses.

wireless is a PITA, every time. once you learn something it will find new ways to break. hard connections FTW.

I couldn't even get it to work as a cabled LAN either (cable to modem, ethernet to router, ethernet to comp). I'm going to see if mebbeh the problem is the powercord indeed by stealing me mum's Linksys non-wireless router.

Mystery solved... it was definitely the power cable :d'oh:

My roommate insisted the power cable was in a particular box. There were only FIVE Nokia chargers and one un-labelled power cord, but I had a suspicion that wasn't it, so I borrowed my mom's and VOILÀ
