Can anyone tell me about my new toy?

I know nothing about electronics.
However one of my buddies from california just shipped me a sort of early christmas gift...
SM20256 VCO IC
wants to get me on my way to building my first monosynth. what i wana know is do any of you guys have any experience in this field?

Looks like it's meant to be used to generate both positive and negative frequencies (either fixed-beat-frequency (20kHz) or variable sine) with the output piped into a mixer. The VCO's are typically used to generate analog music effects.... Or so I heard.
Quality of the signal is mostly dependent upon the number of outputs and oscillators. Although I couldn't find anything specific on that exact model, is it by chance a quadruple output IC? How many oscillators are on the chip? The fewer the better!
