I'll go ahead and queue up my questions:
1.) any benefit for a 2004 WRX Stage II to upgrade to the new AP?
2.) any trade-in programs for the old APs?

1. Once the new AP comes out, there will be no updates for the old AP.
2. Not that I am aware of. I really doubt it.

I guess it's not such a big deal that hey won't support the old APs any more, they sure didn't offer me much support when I needed help after buying the AP direct from Cobb. the mod community helps it's own...
I feel bad for the people who just ordered an old AP. but then again, mine is less than 2 years old.

I guess this is good, for me at least, since I just entered the AP market. I can get something brand spanking new. W00t!

Yeah, as you already know very well, this happens w/ all technology especially computers.
My AP is less than 2 years old as well.
I am guessing that the new AP will have the Street/Pro tuner capability already built in w/ slightly more/new parameters to work w/. I know it will also be universal for multiple platforms/models.

Found on Nasioc:
The benefits of the new AP version2:
-USB (no more need for stupid serial-to-usb converters)
-extremely fast flash time (no more 5-10 minute wait while flashing a basemap)
-eliminates the current limitation on map file size (this is the reason most people are forced to run a basemap+realtime map to get all the tuning they need onto the ECU)
-new AP2 will hold many more maps
-smaller, nicer package (more solid-state, less fragile feeling)
-stores your ECU's actual ROM when you first marry it so it can be truly returned to stock, not just returned to stock-like

NEW ACCESSPORT™ ANNOUNCEMENT
Salt Lake City, Utah, October 29, 2006 - Today Cobb Tuning, Inc. announced the release of the completely redesigned AccessPORT™ handheld programmer and software for Subaru vehicles with planned support for Mitsubishi, Nissan, Mazda, and Toyota vehicles in the future.
Trey Cobb, CEO of Cobb Tuning, Inc. said, "Today's release of the new AccessPORT represents a revolutionary step forward for handheld ECU reprogrammers. With next-generation features and design along with Cobb Tuning's unique on-the-fly tuning technology, the new AccessPORT
is another example of the well-engineered products Cobb Tuning is dedicated to provide its customers."
The AccessPORT by Cobb Tuning, Inc. is a handheld programmer that allows you to unlock your vehicle's hidden potential by reprogramming the stock Engine Control Unit (ECU). Performance tuning data is uploaded to the ECU via the OBD-2 diagnostic port in a matter of minutes, and
requires no cutting, wiring, or other such modifications. Unique to the AccessPORT is the ability to change tuning data on-the-fly without having to completely reprogram the ECU. This technology allows the AccessPORT to get the most performance out of your vehicle in the least amount of time.
Using off-the-shelf staged tuning maps along with the appropriate vehicle modifications, the AccessPORT users can see power gains in excess of 50HP. Better yet, the AccessPORT truly unlocks the ability to extract a vehicle's peak potential through custom tuning for any level of
modification.
The AccessPORT's features include:
• On-the-fly map switching
• Monitor vehicle sensor data and display in analog or digital format
• Vibrant color graphic display with First-Ever full 260,000 color OLED, high-resolution
screen
• Read/Clear engine trouble codes
• Preloaded with performance, economy and convenience maps
• Update via the Internet
• Measure 0-60 and ¼ mile times
• Adjustable on-screen Shift Light functionality
• Estimates horsepower and torque
• Displays current and averaged fuel economy
• Drag race simulation with reaction time and “time slip” data
• Built in on-screen help mode function
• Multi-Language support
• RoHS compliant (Lead Free design)
• Custom performance tuning for your specific vehicle and modifications as provided by an authorized AccessPORT ProTUNER™ center, or upgrade to the StreetTUNER™ software package for do-it-yourself tuning
New AccessPORT - Press Release Supplement
Additional features and benefits:
• Fewer SKUs (one SKU for 2002-2005 WRX (2.0L) and one for 2004-2006 2.5L Turbo - North America)
• USB Connectivity - no more serial ports to configure
• Faster reflashes - Installation and (Base) Map changes are over 10 times faster than original design
• Virtually Unlimited Map Storage - Unit can hold hundreds of map files at the same time
• Original ECU Data stored - AccessPORT reads and stores original ECU data before programming new data. Original data is then used when the AccessPORT is uninstalled from the vehicle
• Field Upgradeable - AccessPORT auto updates when new features and bug fixes are made available (Internet connection required)
• Improved reflashing logic - advanced error checking and recovery mode in the event of an incomplete reflash to reduce chance of rendering ECU inoperable if unit accidently disconnected during programming

I heard that one of the caveats of the new one is that the shops that currently Protune will have to buy new software to be able to program this new AP.

Hopefully I'll be in the market for one of these things in the somewhat near future...
