from /.

Sony's conference offered up reassurance that a number of their titles will be playable at this year's E3. They're much further along in development of the console and games than has been seen in a lot of news sources to date. The controller will sense movement, allowing the player to move an onscreen avatar 'naturally'. They also released the launch details! The North America PS3 launch will occur on Nov. 17th, 2006. The 20gb version will retail for $499, and the 60gb version will go for $599. Whoo. They promise 4 million launch units by December 31st.

Here is my CC info, give me one... NOW....

Finally, a price! I wonder what the mean by:

Does that mean that all these years of using my controller like a steering wheel and tilting it to make those long jumps are finally going to pay off?

There's finally a picture and description of the new controller. Odd, it looks familiar somehow but I can't quite place it.

can they have 4 million rootkits ready in time?

I'm also underwhelmed at the controller. no "force feedback" but they are aping Nintendo's movement sensing.

meh, I'll keep playing the 360 until Christmas. then we shall see what Sony really puts out on the table.

More and more I'm convinced that the PS3 is going to fail. It looks like Nintendo is the only company trying to push the boundaries when it comes to games - whereas Sony and XBox just push more pixels (except for Sony stealing the motion-sensitive controller).

Plus, Blu-Ray is shaping up to be a finnicky and expensive HD format. Will, if you already have an HDTV, you better make sure it's got HDMI or DVI 'cause both high-def DVD formats have the potential to block high-def signals through the component video connection. I really hate DRM!!

Ya, I'm pretty upset about this too. When I was looking at HT receivers, I knew I would need one with HDMI inputs because of this. It REALLY sucks that they are going to block content on non-DRM'ed ports. My guess is there will be some way to unblock this though...

THIS GUY didn't care much at all for Sony's big E3 presentation...
Adding to a list of things they must have "forgotten" about, it seems like a pretty important detail when the lower priced $499 model won't have HDMI support, Wi-Fi, or a slot for memory sticks. They indicated the price difference would be because of the hard drives, a fine way to try and slip by important facts to the press who may not read the rundown on paper.
