the plot thickens... apparently the high bidder backed out so I was offer the chance to buy the brakes and calipers for $740 + $60 shipping. the guy said that he doesn't use PayPal (even thought it IS listed as an accepted form of payment) and I would need send him the money via wire transfer but promised a "30 money back guarantee."

I'm a bit of an EBay n00b, but this sounds just a little fishy. should I be worried? how can I protect myself? I want these brakes...

Doesn't use paypal...sounds fishy to me...especially if it is listed that he does...I know it is a good deal but I wouldn't go through w/ it b/c he sounds like a scammer...not getting a good vibe from it and I don't want you to be out hard earned mod money.

back in October '05 he got a negative feadback for the auction on the rear Brembo brakes...

a guy at work suggested I tell him I have a friend in Washington that will pick up the brakes for me in person. that way I get his address and can investigate him. if he gives me a good address I can say the friend's trip was cancelled. if he doesnt give me the info I know he's a scammer.

I'd be worried. What is the user's feedback rating? Is he/she a n00b on teh ebay?

Gabe: I wouldn't do it. Ask me about the ordeal with the HT receiver sometime. So you have to wait a few more weeks to get them from someone, big deal.

The price is excellent!

And only 5 negative ratings on over 300 responses with what looks to be hundreds of transactions (both buying and selling), this is about as safe a transaction as you get on ebay.

I also looked over some of the negative comments and every one appears to be a shipping issue or a misunderstanding. One guy apparently gave the wrong address, one guy complained about it taking 12 days to get a door (it's a door, you can't just slap a label on it and drop it in the mail. I had to wait 10 days for a used seat coming from PA). He even openly admitted one was his mistake, how often do you see that!

You are always taking a chance with any private seller. Just ask him to give you a legit address and you'll send a cashiers check (from a major bank like Bank of America) and he can wait for it to clear, it will only take 2 days. You'll have a contact address (no POs), and he'll have guaranteed money.

It looks like this guy moves a ton of product, he's got 15 items up right now, mostly subaru stuff and it looks like he's been on ebay for well over a year. On another of his auctions he says "SILVERLINE AUTOMOTIVE 360-513-0663 LEO" and "WE ACCEPT PAYMENTS WITH CASHIERS CHECK, MONEY ORDER, PAYPAL, PERSONAL CHECK AND WIRE TRANSFER. WITH PAYPAL PAYMENTS, A 3% IS CHARGED FOR PAYPAL FEES"

from what I can gather, he sold the rear Brembos in October but had some disagreement with the buyer. after checking the buyer's feedback page I found these comments:
THANK YOU, GREAT BUYER. THANKS FOR THE REPEATED BUSINESS Seller bregada05 ( 244)

going to contact that buyer and see what he has to say about the deal gone bad.

I'm going to tell the seller to send the front Brembos COD or no deal, period. probalby should just call SubyGal and buy those JDM 4pots for $500...

Rear Brembos are VERY tricky. From what I've read, Ver 7s are slightly different than Ver 8s and none fit regular WRXs at all, w/o some modifications. The fronts work w/o any issues I'm aware of.

You can get the black JDM or red USDM  Of course the brembos will brake slightly better but I would very cautious of any sales of people that I can't trust first off.

^^^ What he said. From what I've read it's not worth trying to do unless you are swapping out the entire rear end (at which point you should be swapping in a six speed tranny)

I would probably stick with 4pots in the rear with lgt/h6 rotors (for the rear)

Fronts - Brembo, stoptech, etc all the way.

I have a friend that is running brembo fronts w/ H6 rears, but this ebay deal feels shady to me...I wouldn't want to risk the cash.

I have gotten a couple of 2nd chance offer mails from items that had ended. Turned out to be fake e-mails .

Did this come as a 2nd chance offer, or did the guy contact you directly? If the letter did come from what looks like e-bay, be sure to check the header information to see the routing path. It must originate from an e-bay mail server.

The two that I had were routed through Yahoo and MSN, all the embedded html was spot on with what e-bay normally sends, but watch out for appended tags at the bottom like "do you Yahoo" or "Free MSN chat & mail".

you do understand how incredibly shady this is starting to sound, don't you? if you want to send them C.O.D. then I'll take them for $740. otherwise best of luck with your next auction.

Yep, this is stating to sound less and less legit.

None of the other autions he has up has any mention of him not being able to take PayPal. And why ONLY a wire transfer? My guess is you are no longer dealing with the REAL seller any longer. I'm out of town, my wife will handle it, must be wire transfer, ect.

Did you try calling SILVERLINE AUTOMOTIVE at 360-513-0663 and asking for LEO? That number and contact are on every other auction that seller has right now.
