man, I'm having a really mixed reaction to this... I'm pissed at the impact to users, and those that want to do business on the internet, but I can understand the dramatic impact that streaming video (and not just Netflix, YouTube is huge too by some accounts) has had to the amount of data flowing over networks, and how fragile the situation has been at the interconnects.

so how do we improve it? legislation? nationalize/socialize the interconnects? say f-it and go back to smoke signals?

I'd consider feeling bad for the ISPs if they didn't spend massive amounts of money to kill competition, buy off states to pass laws forbidding cities from rolling their own, and astroturfing.

aaaaaaaand there is exactly my point. my isp charges me based on performance offered. if you're going to offer 50Mb service, you have to deliver what i want to consume.
