Worth any amount of pain for a OBXT 5MT? Or better off feeding money in bales to cloven-hooved animals?

There are some pluses to the OBXT 5MT:
1. 4.44 final drive ratio, so massive torque (of course your gas mileage will suffer a bit).
2. As easily modded as any WRX / STi / FXT / LGT.
3. Ground clearance (if you want/need that)
4. Lots of room
5. Total stealth
6. Good reliability
The only downside is that there are not many cat-back exhaust options available and they tend to be a bit pricey.
I stuck with the stock cat-back for my wagon.

Re: What's it worth? / Run like hell?
I didn't see it on my way to work this AM either, so might be moot point.drwrx wrote:"This posting has been deleted by its author."
The rundown was:
$4000
160k miles
Runs and drives. Getting bad compression on cylinder 4. Rough idle. Plugs and coils replaced. May need valve or gasket job.
(Hence why I put in the engine section, but
without an active post you couldn't have all the details)
So I was wondering if this was a $9k car with a $1500 problem for $4k, or was this a 'ruuuuuuuun!'

It does sound like a $9,000 w/ a $1,500 issue. Depending on the condition.
I would suspect ringlands on #4. It's one of the most common problem on EJ25s.
Depending on the shop it's an easy $1,000 -$1,500 job.

That's what I was hoping for (when it was for sale).drwrx wrote:It does sound like a $9,000 w/ a $1,500 issue. Depending on the condition.

Car was in great condition. It was parked along my drive to work. Sign said 'see craigslist under Outback XT for details.'
Sounds like someone got a deal and knew it. Snatched in like 48 hours of being parked there.
If it was still there today I would have gone cash-in-hand.

Yep, more than likely a ringland because of running lean/too much boost/too much timing. Drop in pistons are ~$2-400, I'd get the cylinders honed and thatched while I was at it. Definitely under $1000 if you do the work yourself.

And it was $4000 OBO. Talk about a missed opportunity.

Yea, probably why it disappeared so quick.
I'd actually make it a $3k problem and do some other stuff while you had it pulled apart.
