Do they really go bad that often? I would have never thought they would.

Phil blew one of mine on the dyno while tuning.
Some EM systems can toast the coil packs.
He charged me ~$75 for replacing one that he took off of one of their cars. List is more like $125. As soon as I could I got a slew of coil packs and have them in the car to replace on if it goes bad.
