2013 Ford Focus ST

Post by Sabre »

Torque Report
The much anticipated 2013 Ford Focus ST is finally here. Focus ST fans already probably know that it's powered by a turbocharged 2.0L EcoBoost engine with 252 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft., but Ford has just announced that it has been rated at 32 mpg highway, 23 mpg city and 26 mpg combined.

The 32 MPG highway rating is better than manual transmission equipped VW GTI and MazdaSpeed3."We're putting the 'power' in the power of choice, again," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. "This is just one more example of the 'win-win' in the Focus ST narrative. This kind of performance combined with these high levels of efficiency sets a new benchmark with this car."

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

FWD and slower than a Mustang V6 (which gets comparable mpg)
2013 BMW 328i M Sport with 8sp in Estoril Blue II
2012 Chrysler 300C SRT8 - Always bet on black
2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Edition, otherwise known as the MW3 (and badass)

Would still make a fun every day car. Not saying I would take it to the track (often, haha).

I wonder if they've properly mitigated the inevitable torque steer that plagues the similar mazdaspeed 3.

From what I understand, they have. Something about axle length and such. I'm sure it's still there, but reduced.

I'll bet dollars to donuts (and I like donuts) that torque steer will rear it's ugly head.
Nothing short of a good trick limited slip diff will mitigate torque steer. The only other option is to minimize torque in 1st gear, which in my mind is NOT a solution.

Note the little section on torque steer.
The things I didn't care for when I first drove the car slowly started to grow on me. The electronic torque steer compensation is the best example of this. The car senses torque steer and feeds power into the rack turning it the other way to offset the pulling of the wheel. It's way more complicated than that but you get the idea.
Hmmmmmmm.

Sounds better than braking to limit torque steer!
