It's a hair early, but that could be pretty awesome. Seeing the orbiter doesn't suck, but seeing that sick 747 is awesome.

<marks calendar> Let's make an event of it!
I know my wife and daughter would LOVE to see this and it would be a memorable event for the little one. My wife still remembers when the Concorde flew over her office on it's final approach to the museum.

I would love to see this. Sadly, it sounds like the viewing window will be very brief, even at the Udvar-Hazy lot. I'd love to see it, but I'm not certain it is worth the effort.
I watched a shuttle launch back in 1989 and that was awesome. We brought our lunch, sat on the beach and waited. I was down in Daytona for Spring Break and it was only a short drive and walk down the beach so it was convenient as well.
I also was able to watch two of the last flying B-17 and B-24s of the Confederate Air Force land and take-off from Richmond International Airport (RIC). They were on display for a short period of time at the Richard Byrd Aviation Museum (now the Virginia Aviation Museum) which was just across the street from where I was working at the time.

Sure. I don't have a daughter, but I'm pretty sure wifey would be down for this, too.

Yea, their website says that you won't see anything. It will land at Dulles and then spend a couple days getting 'unmated' over there. I think the best shot is going to be find a tall building near Dulles and watch the approach.

the 5th floor conference rooms at GDIT and GTSI have wonderful views.

Depends on whether they'll make the approach from the north or the south which one is better located.

Gonna admit, I really don't care to see the shuttle fly in. As neat as it would be, I think it'll be a bit too much effort to try and find a vantage point. However, I'm super excited to get to finally see a real one up close at Udvar.

To see it fly in on the back of a 747, and for the last time, would seriously rock my world. I am so jealous...

Space shuttle likely to fly over D.C. area next week
Thursday - 4/12/2012, 10:47am ET
WASHINGTON - Space shuttle Discovery is expected to fly over Washington's landmarks next week on the back of a Boeing 747 and will also be visible from points in Maryland and Virginia.
On Tuesday morning, Discovery will be flown from Florida to its new home at the Smithsonian. It will be housed at the National Air and Space Museum's annex in northern Virginia.
The Smithsonian recommends several viewing sites.
In Washington, the public can gather on the National Mall for a shuttle sighting. Other sites include Hains Point and the Southwest Waterfront.
In Virginia, Discovery may be seen from Old Town Alexandria's Waterfront, Gravelly Point near National Airport and Long Bridge Park. In Maryland, Discovery may be seen from National Harbor.
Discovery likely will arrive between 10 and 11 a.m.

I have permission to go on to the roof of our building, which is in direct flight path when it passes Dulles the firs time and then again when it comes in for a landing

I'll grab pics and video
PGT: Not sure either, but from what I understand, it's going to make a pass by twice, so I'm sure I'll see it

Bad news: Too many people requested to get on the roof, so now we have to make sue on the ground

I'll grab as much video as I can. Also, if you can't make it outside:
