Chrysler has officially announced the reopening of its Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit that will produce the next-generation Viper. The Conner plant was closed in July 2010 when production of the Dodge Viper ended.
The next-generation Viper will return in late 2012 as a 2013 model, but will drop the Dodge name and instead be referred to as the SRT Viper.

“We’re extremely excited that our ultimate American sports car will continue to live on and be produced exclusively here in the Motor City,” stated Ralph Gilles, President and Chief Executive Officer – SRT Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC.

The 2013 Viper is expected to pack a massive 8.7L V10 engine with more than 600 horsepower. We could see the new Viper as early as next month at the Detroit Auto Show.

That's why this one will have more than 600.

Just to give a time line:

So from the linear trending, we can assume this one will have at least 600lbs/ft and ~650HP.

And I'm guessing that this is not the chemical irritant kind of mace...

Jokes aside...

Both are expected to be low 3000 lbs.

Since the nsx is marketed more towards the luxo crowd, I expect the viper to have more capable suspension.

The inner-wheel braking with outer-wheel power feature of the nsx on turn-in will be interesting. I suspect it will mean neutral-toe in front since toe-out won't be needed to help turn-in, which in turn will probably be [nominally] less drag going straight and better braking [than otherwise].

The NSX's electric motors mean that some % of the car's total power will have 100% torque available at any rpm. If honda truly manages low 3000 lbs, the torque-on-tap could make up for the lower hp ... to an extent. (I wouldn't be too shocked if the nsx's combined torque topped that of the viper).

I guess, I'm thinking that for now it's not clear which is the mace, and which is the scalpel. I'm eager to see a comparison like 5th gear does, where they overlay the video of two cars on the same track.

Side note: I'm not a big fan of adding multiple motors together to arrive at the total HP and torque. It may be perfectly valid but it just feels wrong to me somehow. :ugh:

If the new NSX is as brilliant as the old, it will be a terrific car. I just hope they build it for American-sized buyers. I've driven several examples of the original and would own one now, but, I'd have to yank the stock seats and put carbon shells right on the floor to have enough headroom. Not many Japanese males over 5'9", it seems.

This is a problem I'm intimately familiar with. I always wonder how Jeremy Clarkson drives those cars.

The last gen. viper was one of the only cars that actually scared me when I pushed it. I think the only thing that made me more tense was a 427 Shelby. In my opinion its the viper is the closest thing to a drift car you can buy straight of the showroom floor.

I've ridden in a blown GTS Coupe and a normal GTS. I'll never ride in a supercharged one again. The regular one is dicey enough. My buddy missed the 3-4 and caught 2 at 80mph.....good thing the rear end is stout because the speed differential caused the back-end to come around in a fury. Luckily, a quick foot on the clutch and things returned to normal.

2013 SRT Viper Debuts in New York, the Viper Returns!

Image
After all the teased photos and speculation, the 2013 SRT Viper was finally unveiled today at the 2012 New York Auto Show. As most automakers continue to downsize their engines, the 2013 Viper bucks this trend by keeping a large V10 under the hood and even though the 2013 Viper is all-new, it's easily recognizable.

The SRT Viper will be offered in two versions, the SRT Viper and the more track ready Viper GTS. Viper buyers expect and insane amount of power under the hood and Chrysler continues to deliver in the fifth generation Viper. The 2013 Viper is powered by a 8.4L aluminum V10 engine with 640 horsepower and 600 lb-ft. of torque. The V10 has the most torque of any naturally aspirated engine in the world and is mated to a standard Tremec TR6060 six speed-manual transmission.
Damn that thing has to be quick. I wasn't too far off on my guess either :) It looks very Italian to me, but I don't think that is a bad thing. It is an american car, but box shapes can only go so fast, even with all those poines, haha. If I could afford one, I'd buy one!
