Anyone else think that this is in response to the BRZ??!?!?!According to Autocar, the next Mazda MX-5 Miata will be powered by a turbocharged 1.3L SkyActiv engine, which will replace the current 167 horsepower 2.0L.
The new 1.3L engine will employ SkyActiv technologies like variable cam phasing with lower friction parts to boost performance and fuel economy. The 1.3L will also be mated to reduced-friction transmissions.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the 2014 MX-5 Miata is expected to be based on the new rear-wheel-drive S-platform. Mazda's engineers have been tasked with dropping the MX-5's weight significantly. One insider claims that Mazda has a goal of dropping the curb weight to 800 kg (1,760 lbs). The next MX-5 will be smaller and get Mazda's new Kodo design theme, which was first shown on the Shinari concept.

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

A mini horsepower war is a win-win for enthusiasts.
But then again, Mazda teased a turbo version of the current Miata but never delivered...

Doubt it, I think they're just looking for fuel economy gains. The miata has never been known for being a fuel sipper. For their engine size and weight they're actually kinda thristy. A 1.3L is not a lot of displacement, I think they'll only be looking to match the current output.Sabre wrote:The Torque Report

Also, don't put too much stock in this. Mazda has been teasing about a new miata and/or new engines for years now.

Yeah, a 1.3 turbo isn't gonna put out much more power than the current lump.

Wait, what happened to one (or both) of your thumbs?
Was there some terrible band-saw incident that we are not aware of?
