my long obession....BMW 3.0 CS, CSi and CSL aka the Bat Car

Ever since chasing a silver CSi around the back streets of Harrisonburg, VA during college in my '90 Prelude, I've wanted one. Several examples have shown up at Cars and Coffee in Great Falls this summer. I REALLY want on. I really want a CSL but they're north of $100K these days so a CSi makes the most sense.

Some pics of recent examples available for sale.

this CSi is $22k but also currently on eBay. A solid, well cared for example....one I wouldn't hesitate to drive.

The "Bat Car"....3.0 CSL (factory lightweight)....front air dam, fins on the front fenders, etc. $150K

lastly, an "Alpina" conversion (not a real one...this predates Alpina but uses more modern Alpina parts in a tasteful "resto-mod" fashion)

Here's one that's not too expensive but also one that's already been restored (so, worth the $35K. Unrestored examples go for $12-15k). I might even be able to convince the wife this belongs in the garage.....effing gorgeous. It's begging for a CSL front apron and that's it.

I was lucky enough to see a real example of the car that ruled German Touring Car in the 1970's.....this was taken up at the new part of Summit Point in 2005. Day before HyperFest I think.

Wow, I didn't know anything about those. Very good looking car and sound like a hoot to drive! The size of the tires on that one that is in the air. OMG.

I heart any car with a big CAM. That thing sounds like it just wants to go every time they hit the gas!!!

^^ agreed. boner-inducing, even.

the shop i worked for in md had a bunch of really cool 3.0 conversions and such... my personal fav had the m5 motor stuffed in its bonnet. such a great, great car.

this motor was the predecessor of the M1's.....the racing spec bred the next generation.

I find it very interesting that back in 75/6 we had NA racing motors putting out that kind of power/l and today we are not even close in production cars.

The current M3 motor isn't far off of that in terms of specs and comes with a warranty and meets modern emissions regs (which that M49/2 laughs at). Race motors last a season, if that. Power is easy if longevity isn't a design criteria.

But, yeah.

so, a friend let me know there's a local CSL for sale that's been properly restored. Numbers matching, white with M livery. $150k (a fair price). Damn, I wish I had stupid money to burn....

Sounds like an ideal car for you, but that is a damn good amount of scratch.

Exactly, that's why a CSi for $25k makes more sense
