I've seen the stuff that GDRS has (from the first page of the article), and done some UGV stuff myself (Dragon Runner, http://www.usmc.mil/marinelink/mcn2000. ... enDocument)
Incredible how far stuff has come. Literally, from autonomous HMMWV's that could barely drive in a straight line 5 years ago to full autonomous stuff (GD's is close in size to a four-wheeler and does everything the article says plus more) now, gonna be interesting to see what happens with UGVs and UAVs (unmanned air vehicles) and UCAVs (unmanned combat air vehicles) in the future.

With the recent unmanned atonomous vehicle stuff done by DARPA, you're going to see more and more of this stuff. IIRC, it was the team with the VW Toreg that won, but I could be wrong.

Lets clarify that... DARPA doesn't do anything other than write checks. They wrote a check for a prize, a bunch of research groups and companies busted their butts. DARPA claims credit for doing some contracting paperwork...

Ok, hold on... True, DARPA holds competitions, such as this, and does exactly what you said, but the also develop technologies on their own. lol, most of the employee's at their locations are probably civilians though...

DARPA does not run a single research facility. Seriously. They steal good technical people from industry or universities or have politicaly connected defense contractors forced on them and train them in contracting. They do contracting work for 2 years and then send them home. Thats it. If the person is good technically they have some ideas they want to see get developed, but they don't actually do any work (insert Office Space quote here).
