GoPro Hero HD

Got a bunch of questions about the camera I used for the Karting videos.

Camera was a GoPro Hero HD. Can get them anywhere (Amazon, buy.com, best buy, etc). Does 1080p videos as well as pictures. Really nice. Chews up alot of memory card, but you can get 16GB cards for $35 so thats not a big deal anymore. Came with a helmet 'thong' (as I call it), elastic that goes around and over your helmet so you don't have to stick anything to it. Also comes with some plastic mounts with double stick tape for mounting to hoods, roofs, fairings, etc.

Kick ass stuff. If you're going to be doing alot consider the battery extension and/or LCD extension. I had a significant challenge knowing if I got video, if the video was running (hence this), etc. The only way it was any bit reliable was to turn it on before putting my helmet on (I couldn't hear the beeps) and ask someone to confirm it was blinking (hard to see in bright light).

Youtube sucked the video right in, no issues at all.

All around, for $250-$300, great way to catch stupid human tricks.

Thx for the information. I did some searching yesterday after I saw your videos. Definitely, something nice to have. Did/do you shoot in 1080p? I was looking at the Hero 960 as a comparison, although you don't get the expansion port.

The video that you took is really making me think that I'm going to pick one up at some point. Between skiing and racing, I'm sure I would use it a lot.

I also use a GoPro HD for the external video for autox (flip video camera for internal just because I got it for free) as well as external video for rallyX (The sealed waterproof case is real nice for keeping dust out of the camera during rallyX events)

I've been thinking that one of these would be great to document my time :drive: in Germany.

Julian, if you get one you two should get the 3D cable/case and do some REALLY cool racing videos.

"But then we're talking serious cash" Besides, I'd feel like a hipster then :rolllaugh:

I have to admit, adding the second later on though would be interesting...

Does the Gopro mounted to the helm pick up the wearer's voice? If so, is it clear?

Yep, those videos should be in 1080p. (I changed it at one point, forget when). It can do a 'slow motion' (higher frame rate) at lower resolutions.

It did pick up me talking, to me it seemed reasonable clear given I had 12+ karts running around me and I had a full face helmet on with the visor mostly (fully) closed. Check video #1, thats me asking someone about 5' away a question.

That's the same price as the official site for the "naked" cam. If you happen to get the free 32GB Extreme Sandisk SD card (while supplies last) then it's a good deal.

Amazon.com has the GoPro HD Motorsports for $237.33 with free Super Saver Shipping.
Not sure how long it will last but I think I'm pulling the trigger today.

I finally broke down and bought one along with the LCD Bacpac. Hopefully it gets here before my trip to "Little Swiss" on the 30th.

Just got the GoPro today, it's charging now. I'm meeting that group tomorrow so hopefully I'll have some footage to share soon.

Any tips on mounting the camera?

Some place solid? Sorry, I couldn't help it. It seem the higher up the better from the footage I have seen of various setups. Maybe middle front of the roof?

I just shot a few videos, having a hard time turning it on and off of all things. Having 2 buttons and a little LCD screen means there's a bit of a learning curve to the controls....

I'll have a look at the 2 mounting positions I tried and see if anything is worth posting.

My autox videos are mostly from the middle front roof recently (Rallyx at summit is middle front of hood but the philly ones are roof). I have tried on the side of the car a few times for a different view.

As for the controls I prefer to setup the camera to automatically start recording when I turn it on. That way I can just have anybody hold down the button for a couple of seconds to turn it on and not worry about anything except turning it on and off.

I'm getting better after just a little practice.
Now I just need a good video editing program. I don't seem to get along well with iMovie.

I should have applied RainX to the GoPro for today's "summer" drive. Check out this screen cap:

yea, the two button interface was hard, especially mounted on the helmet. I had to remember to turn it on, confirm the mode, put the helmet on, get in the cart, and then start recording and ask someone else to confirm it was blinking... Moxnix, you must have a different firmware if you could get yours to start recording at boot, mine didn't have that option.

There is a "one button" option but I prefer to push the shutter button to start recording.
Now I just need a good video editing program, I hate iMovie...

I'm going to do some playing with this: http://www.videolan.org/vlmc/

VLC Player is some kick ass software, high hopes for this as well.
