It's being reported that Lotus is going to unveil an Exige-based rally car at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall. Lotus has already announced plans to widen its motorsport activities to offer a race car for the GT rally category.

According to CAR, even though the Exige is no longer produced, a successor is in the works. Claudio Berro, Lotus's director of motorsport, claims that Lotus will homologate the necessary 300 models in time for a January 2012 launch.

It's not yet known which formula (WRC or IRC) the Lotus Exige rally car will compete in.

I always think of a Lotus as being light and nimble... not tough enough for a rally car. This should be interesting!
