Mr Yerli the President of Crytek goes on to detail, “we will be launching a free CryENGINE SDK. If you want to use it for fun, like all our previous MOD SDKs it will be completely free of charge, to anyone who wants to play with it! You just register, download the SDK with a personalized license key and you’re good to go! If you want to use it to make a game to launch commercially, we’d like to help you with that. If you want to take your product down a traditional commercial route, we will offer an innovative low cost licensing model if you want to release your game digitally.”
Pretty cool of them to do this, especially considering this is pretty new. I know id software has done the same before, but usually one generation behind the newest.

The latest engine is actually a step back from the previous in terms of graphics (there's been analysis done online to compare the renderers, and the latest is lower quality than the earlier variant).
Point being? Latest and last gen is the same thing, 'technically'.

So many developers are going PC and console at the same time, the PC stuff is stalled around the geforce 6000 series time (current gen console hardware). Running faster is more rewarding than improving graphics for newest gen PC hardware (which the few of the few will leverage).

Wow, that's pretty surprising that render quality went down. What exactly were the enhancements then?

The Unreal engine definitely improved with it's latest release.

cross platform, improved framerates.

Plus the 'live' map editing on a PC with a console client updating its contents in realtime over ethernet.
