The Next Factory Five Car

Based on tough Subaru WRX running gear, Factory Five's next car has been in development for almost a year. With a space frame designed and tested on SolidWorks software, this single donor car will sell for $9,900. We will use our 15 years of accumulated design and manufacturing skills to deliver a "world car" that can be COMPLETED for less than $15,000.

Why the :censor: are they making it a roadster?!? I want a rigid chassis and roll-over protection (that's what she said) in my sports car. :screwy:

Isn't the classic definition of a "sports car" a roadster? :poke:

I know I'd like one. a 2.0L drivetrain is cheap and more than ample for the size of the car. hell, an H6 would be downright fun if swapped to a manual in that scenario

I'm with Ezra Dyer: I'd love to see a Lancia Stratos knock-off. But hopefully the removable hard top will hide a nice beefy roll bar/cage structure.
I guess I'm actually more worried about the final styling...

second gear is weak on the pre-05 drivetrains but the 5sp reinforced cases introduced on the BL/BP Legacy for 2005 are darned stout.

It was built for power, not because of a lack of reliability.

because the instructor over-revved it, yes.

no car can withstand that.

Over revving + failed oil pump = boom

Factory Five 818 kit car news update
818 is a weird name until you do the metric math on 1800 lbs.
now with moar video!

I spy a steel hoop over the occupant area. Not quite a roll cage, but better than nothing.

Sad to see they are making it RWD... but if they do it right, I suppose it will work!

Kind of ironic that I get out of the STI in time for them to do exactly what I always wanted that car to be -- RWD! Come on J, you know that car is going to be both a beast and a lot of fun to drive. You remember those 1000+hp dune buggies I showed you built on flat 4's and sixes from Subarus? This is that, only for the road. :)

Oh, I know it will be a ton of fun... I just thought with them saying WRX running gear, they were keeping the AWD.

Especially since the transmissions are open front diff. Now that the front is the new rear, I think a new diff is essential.
I wonder if they are factoring in the cost of splitting the case, swapping the diff, and then spec-ing the tolerances in their price tag. That is $1.2 K easy.

Since weight savings was one of the goals, seems like there would be other lighter gearboxes compared to an AWD with the transfer gear removed and the extension case lopped off.
But what do I know.

I think they were probably looking at supply in the marketplace and ability to be modded to high power levels as much as anything.

If it comes out having as much balance as and Exige, then it might be OK, but with that much power and a non-linear powerband, I see a lot of spinning wheel ahead.
