DCAWD.com

2000 Rally of the Voyaguers, northern Ontario, Canada. Rallyracing drowsy from being up all night working on servicecrew van. We go off on a fast right and launch over a ravine, smack the lip of far side of ravine and go airborne again, thru some tree branches and wack, ...smack a tree several feet off ground that doesn't budge. Feel bones break in my torso and thinking I just broke my back. Car falls to ground. We both confirm to each other we are still alive and I open my door. Despite some pain, able to get out and walk so know my back isn't broken. Find out its all my ribs.

Next day, drive all the way home to DC eating painkillers like skittles.

I broke 1 rib once. it hurt. a lot.

Just the recount had my hair on end.
I suspect this will take a while to mend.
Hope the pain will dininish quickly.

I am reminded of a buddy who ruptured his sternum in an accident and contracted broncitus in the hospital.
He claimed each cough was excrutiating pain again and again and again.

Damn Dave, that looks like it was not a fun way to come back to DC! Does look like a hell of a ride though!

Yeah, I'd recovered from that for the most part. The guy who took the pic just sent it to me yesterday so thought I'd retell the story.

But..., I'm still paying for it. Caught pneumonia in November at a Canadian rally. Did the recce in a car w/o a heatercore and then worked the rally outdoors on a frigid day. The coughing pulled rib cartilage and muscle in my right side in December and then my left side last week. Perhaps wouldn't have happened w/o my prior rib injuries (I also did my sternum a different time).

So thanks for the get well wishes anyway. Still need them.
