I got an email from Tiger Direct with a listing of Sony 3D LED HDTV setups. I'm not in the market, but it looks to me like a good set of deals if you want to be all new and fancy.

erm, no.

while the deals seem pretty reasonable(?), we just don't watch enough tv to warrant it.

i'm also curious to see how quickly this 3D standard will be adopted... i've not enjoyed most 3D presentations. avatar was the lone exception.

Avatar and Up were the two exceptions for me.

Sadly, 3D is going to be pushed down our throats... Pretty much everyone has bought a LCD/DLP/Plas TV in the last 5 years, so sales are down. This is the only way to "make" them go up, even though the majority of people really don't need/want it.

adoption of flat panels saturated the market by 2007, putting my old employer out of business. I remember selling 50" Pioneer plasmas back when they were $20k+ each (1999).

Wow! I remember installing them and designing/programming the automation systems around that same time. They were some stupid expensive sets...

Ive heard good things about 3D gaming, but for that sort of outlay I need to try it out myself first.

How old are you?

Have you seen either? Avatar was a 3D tech demo, not an original movie.
Up has the saddest opening 15 minutes of any cartoon I've seen. Add to that the fact that my Grandfather had just gone through a similar ordeal.

Avatar, while not original, was still a good flick IMHO. If I walk away and was entertained, then the movie succeeded. Not everything has to move you or teach you a life lesson. That is what real life is for I totally agree with you on Ups' opening scene, but it sets the stage for the rest of the movie.

BTW, two of my favorite movies (where are totally uncharacteristic for me) are Shawshank Redemption and What Dreams May Come. So I guess part of me likes the heart rippers.

Not every movie has to teach a life lesson, but at least try to be a tiny bit original. Avatar was just Ferngully done by Blue Man Group.

I saw a Sony and Panasonic 3D setup today.
The Sony had a strobing effect that was very noticeable to myself and both the non-videophile guys with me. I wonder if it had anything to do with the florescent lights in the store?
The Panasonic looked amazing.


I really would like to see a PS3 hooked up to one of them (preferable the Panasonic or a Samsung).

I still don't get this 3D craze. It doesn't even work for me half the time. It's like my brain fights the cheezy 3D effects. I think my big problem is that 3D offers nothing to the movie. So what if the guy sticks his pointy spear at you or the heroine's hand comes out of the screen when she punches the villain? I find it distracting and actually destroys immersion because of the fact that you can tell certain actions, movements, or even entire scenes were placed there JUST to show off the 3D 'wow' effect. Often times it seems like the entire movie revolves more around 3D effects than it does plot. I understand that some people like it that's fine... but I only ever enjoyed 3D back in the late 90s when I went to Universal Studios. That's about it. I wasn't so opposed to it until they started making movies ONLY in 3D. Now the only choice is to wear goofy glasses at the theater or not see the movie until it comes out on disc. If they start ONLY releasing home content in 3D I think I might just have to.... well.... uselessly rant some more because I doubt the entertainment industry is going to stop doing this as long as people keep buying this crap.

I thought 3D added to Up and Avatar, but not to Alice in Wonderland.

I want to try FPS gaming and watching WRC coverage in HD3D.

Wired rated the Sony HD3D pretty low and also noticed pulsing/flickering.
Maybe not such a good deal after all.

It looks like Cameron gets it.

I couldn't agree more. Either shoot the thing in 3D from the beginning, or scrap the idea completely.
