What a wonderful abstraction!
Essentially, take a mid point between CenterA and CenterB.
If you move that midpoint (point of engagement) towards CenterA, then you move it an equal distance away from CenterB.
Meaning, you can use any shape you want, so long as the other gear has the opposite difference from the midpoint.
The only pitfall is to watch for pre-engagement collision.
I'm so glad you showed that video... I would have never thought of it that way.
