Not bad if they leave the extra mirror off when it gets over here.

Looks like some of the height difference might be ground/tire clearance. :|

One thing I've always watched with the Foresters is ground clearance:

2006-2008 Forester X - 8.1"
2006-2008 Forester XT - 7.9"

2008 Tribeca (all models) - 8.4"
2008 WRX Sedan - 6.1"

2008 FORD EXPLORER 4X4 Eddie Bauer 4.0L - 8.2"
2008 CHEVROLET TRAILBLAZER LT1 4WD - 7.8"
2008 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE Laredo 4X4 - 8.0"
2008 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER XLS 4WD - 8.5"
2008 BMW X3 3.0si Sports Activity Vehicle - 8.0"
2008 HUMMER H3 SUV Base - 9.1"

(Data on the Forester and Tribeca is from Subaru's website, all others is from Ford's website)

I was shocked to see how high the Outlander sat, it doesn't look that different from the Forester. And back in '03 and '04 I believe the Forester was the same as the Explorer.

My thinking was that if the new one is any higher off the ground, you could bring it back down to earth on some STI springs, etc.

The '09 Forester at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show (without those weird-ass fender-mounted mirrors): Linky
AutoBlog wrote:Today in Detroit we finally got to see the long-anticipated (by some of us at least) 2009 Subaru Forester that was revealed on Christmas Day. We've covered the JDM version and the US model pretty extensively, but now we have a few live shots of this fun and funky CUV for those who like that sort of thing. As we've already revealed, US customers will have their choice of naturally-aspirated and turbocharged versions of the same 2.5L boxer four-cylinder engine that has been offered in the past, although they've been reworked for more low-end torque.

The new, longer press release is after the jump, and if you peruse it you'll learn that the engines put out 170 HP/170 ft-lbs and 224/226 for the NA and turbo versions, respectively. Pretty much what we assumed, seeing as how they are virtually identical to those used in the Impreza. Although not specifically outlined in the release, we'll probably be getting the same trim levels as in the past: base 2.5X, Sports 2.5X, 2.5X L.L. Bean Edition paired with the NA engine and the 2.5XT, Sports 2.5XT and 2.5XT Limited offered with the turbo. New features for the 2009 US-spec Forester include available satellite navigation, standard Vehicle Dynamics Control and traction control, and Incline Start Assist on models with the manual transmission. Check out the live shots of US-spec 2009 Forester that have been added to our gallery below and read Subaru's press release after the jump.

I was bored, so I decided to ninja-lower the new Forester XT. Here are the before and after pics:

Personally, I think it looks like an Explorer at stock height.

I'll bet if the new Forester/Impreza/STI springs are compatible it would look look a lot better. That an an '08 Forester front bumper/grille and we're in business.

<RANT> I thank God that I got my '08 FSXT. Can you believe that SOA after teasing us w/ the almost FSTi (aka '08 FSXT...basically as close as we get in the US to an FSTi from the factory), have now redesigned the XT to this crap bucket and won't even offer us a 5spd MT tranny...nor are we getting that nice sporty from grill and bumper over here. I wonder if those bastages over at Toyota had anything to do w/ this? :censor: Okay, I have nothing against toyota...okay, maybe the Yaris. </RANT>

On the other hand, I think I may have convinced my father to buy my mother an '09 NA AT forester b/c it is larger than the older models.

That's a biggun. I think 08 was the last year for the enthusiast.

tangent alert: I find it funny that we're complaining that the Forrester has gotten too big and now looks like a CRV. remember when the CRV was first introduced how tiny it was? and the RAV4 is now larger than the original Land Cruiser.
automakers need to lay off the 'roids.
