You mean when they ship the device with either a 3G GSM or CDMA chipset, right? ;)

exactly :) High speed as apposed to.... almost modem speeds!

I have heard rumors that there is actually 3G support.... but that it's not turned on for battery life reasons...

'Fraid not, amigo :( Teh chipset will not support 3G.

Perhaps next rev?

I guess I'm not getting an iPhone, eh?

IIRC, most new phones/plans with AT&T are using the same cardstock. It was probably just easier to use the same cards as the rest of teh phones.

Without the 3G radio, there really isn't much to be done. You can't download a new piece of firmware as an update.

Okay, I'm stepping off my soapbox now. Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

ok, guys... I know the difference between software and hardware ;) I was told by someone(who would know!) that the hardware existed in the phone, but it was turned off through firmware... then I saw that picture and I thought it provided a little bit of confirmation that it might be true.... Maybe it is all wishful thinking, who knows! Maybe when they were deciding which carrier to go with they incorporated all the hardware they needed for all of them and then just turned off that hardware when a carrier was selected.... All possibilities!

nope, no 3G radio hardware in the iPhone (yet). there was a lot of speculation that 3G was a firmware update away but this (sadly) turns out not to be the case.
