not with 180hp of NA fury it won't. The 2.0L mill in the Hyundai and Kia offerings makes that look cheap (oh, the irony)

I have a feeling that they will purposefully hold out on the turbo to start, milk the N/A for all it is worth, and then put out something that everyone really wants...kind of like when they put out the regular edition LOR blurays and then offer the extended versions later. But, regardless, it is a sweet looking ride as of those pics...we have no idea the final product looks or offerings...we have no idea the performance that will be offered until it actually comes out.

All depends on weight :)

Subaru has a really hard time making cars that come in under 3500lbs. They have airbags to protect the other airbags. Modern cars meeting modern nanny restrictions are just going to be heavy. I think it's clear that with a small motor you can still make gobs of power, but it's gotta have forced induction. Alternatively, I guess, it could have lots of CF and aluminum on it, but that's going to make it deadly expensive, and Subaru ain't interested in a $50k sports car. It's just not their market.

a FWD MINI Cooper S with no sunroof and no options weighs in at 2600+lbs. Its reasonably quick in standard form but look at what the AWD system adds to that and you're easily into 1.5T territory.

Then again, the Japanese like to use recycled beer cans for sheet metal so it might still be light! Better get on a payment plan with your local PDR guy

Forgoing AWD will save quite a bit of weight, no turbo will save a little more (but at the cost of power and my support).
It's starting to sound like a hard top Miata.

Caught Testing: 2012 Scion FR-S - Spy Shots

ImageImage
Image
The Scion FR-S appears to have left the bright lights of New York City for the twists and turns of the world famous Nürburgring. Last seen during the New York Auto Show, the Scion FR-S (Front engine, Rear wheel drive, Sport) was sporting notably flashy bodywork courtesy of Five Axis, a show car and customization house in Southern California. We never expected the concept car’s massive 20-in. wheels and rear diffuser to reach production. But we hoped the aggressive contours of this sports coupe would remain (relatively) intact.

Goodbye Fender Peaks

The FR-S prototype spotted near the Nürburgring has confirmed our suspicions about the production model being more toned down in overall appearance. A new rear wing has been installed, and smaller rims have replaced the show car’s oversized wheel package. That’s to be expected. But where are the gorgeous peaked fenders we saw in New York?

Apparently, someone has taken a razor to the curves of the FR-S Concept. Unless this test mule’s swirly paint is doing a fantastic job of hiding some design details, the production car will look vastly less dramatic. A large pair of exhaust pipes sticking out back at least holds onto the promise that this rear-wheel-drive coupe should be a riot to drive.

Flat-4 Power

Developed by both Toyota and Subaru, the Scion FR-S will be powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-4 engine that produces about 200 bhp. A 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters will be available. There will also be a Subaru-badged version. All-wheel-drive and turbocharged engines could eventually make their way into the range (either in the Scion or, more likely, the Subaru).
I definitely see the subaru wheels.

Everything is watered down these days. Hardcore generally doesn't sell in large enough numbers to be viable for a volume manufacturer like Toyota. Porsche can do these sorts of things because they operate on a much higher profit margin.
