I think my engine is done

Post by goob_os101 »

I came to get an inspection and while in traffic I could hear a hard metal clapping sound above 2500. Shop thnks the engines bad, but not sure what part. Gotta send it in for a diag.

Yeesh. Hope it is just something like a heat shield or crank pulley or something like that.

Agreed, could be a lot of things. I wouldn't worry.... yet. Get a shop to do a leak down / compression test and maybe even drain the oil or pull the oil pan.

I now think(hope) it is the header lose and vibrating. It only makes the sound (heavy metal and somewhat hollow) at 2500-3000rpm after that it tapers away. I put in 4th and hit 10psi and no sound. I am gonna go to Ft Myer's hobby shop tomorrow and throw her up on the lift and see if any piping is lose.

If you want to give it a shot, I'm pretty good at identifying header sounds. You could stop by and I could lend an ear, but with lift access so easy, it might be just as easy to go right to the source.

Well hell, then you can pick me up at Van Dorn Metro. That will be a nice change from the bus. I can be at the station any time after ~ 5:15. Maybe PM me with your number and we can coordinate?

Well, not the exhaust manifold... :(. Large metallic clacking noise, not a simple rattle.
Only happens off load, not under acceleration.
Stuffed a 2x4 and moved the block around and the noise was still there.
Louder below the car than above, drivers' side more than pax.
Happens with trans in and out of gear, clutch in or out.

I'm stumped

I'm stumped

My suggestion would be either the manifold itself being warped from spending too much time hot. Is there a way there can be a gasket that's got leakage on the turbine or the driver's side of the exhaust mani or other hot-side stuff? I don't know whether the car has an exhaust manifold gasket. Gabe said he's making full boost? And the sound is transient between 2500-3500? Might be a warped manifold or bolt. That would certainly behave like that (have a "period" when it's more clanky, and a larger period where it's happier; but it could be reversed, depending on how out-of-whack it was).

It doesn't sound like engine. Zak, it doesn't seem like a valve train clatter? It would be easier if I could hear it, but I'm going to be pretty limited on that.

Good news is, Gabe, that you probably don't have a busticated engine. Unless it's a sly and really angry gremlin (and they do exist, they're rare, but tres expensive and equally sneaky).

The real Gabe has other noise issues, this Jeremy has the engine noise...
It is def not an exhaust leak. Though with one of the six exhaust manifold studs not taking a nut, I don't see how he doesn't have a leak.

When putting the 2x4 between the driver's side valve cap and the frame rail, I could "feel" the noise through the plank of wood. Also when putting the 2x4 to my ear/jaw bone it was quite noticeable.

I'm thinking a valve lifter or shim at the worst.

I've never heard of rod bearing's being starved at specific RPMs', but I could be wrong. We'll take a listen on Monday :)
