Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

meh. i'll take other features (security, usability) over raw performance any day.

how much do you suspect that some/most of those packages are primarily developed by linux developers, thus various biases/etc.

perhaps a lame excuse, but i've always been shocked over the years at how many "good" open source packages utterly failed to work on non-linux platforms. it's not that hard to build on a sane environment. in many cases, i think many developers don't bother to actually read the specs of the libs they are relying on.

ok, yeah, soap box.

Oh, I totally agree with you on security and usability, but I really did think that some of the numbers would be a lot closer. The new version of the scheduler should have definitely helped in this test. I totally agree with you on the libraries/code: It's really optimized for Linux and then ported over to FreeBSD with minimal modification to get it working... but not optimized.

Is BSD supposed to be a performer? I never thought so. I know it makes a pretty good firewall.

Secure, fast and stable is what I think every OS tries to be (at least, I hope so). FreeBSD + Apache for years was the fastest web server around, but now I think that is kind of up in the air. The TCP/IP stack has always been a very strong point as well.
