Impreza WRX STi - Now with 45% more automatic transmission!
For the STi enthusiast who doesn't want the bother of shifting gears, and lives in Japan.

I know IWSTI was up in arms over the rumor of an auto-sti. It'd be stupid for Subaru NOT to offer one though. They will certainly sell well. Not that I'd be interested in such a thing... but when I worked at Subaru we had tons of people ask if it came in an automatic. It'll probably make it's way over to America eventually I think

I, for one, liked the fact that the STi didn't come in automatic. It kept certain wannabes from buying them.

Oh don't get me wrong. I agree with you that I'd rather the STi didn't offer an automatic. It kept it a bit more exclusive. But like it or not Subaru's goal is to sell as many cars as possible. Automotive/racing enthusiasts are a very small part of their customer base so to only market to us would just be bad business. With Fast and the Furious featuring an STi they are going to have even more of a spotlight on the STi. Particularly in Amercia..if you can go out and buy "that car that paul walker had in the movie" regardless of if you can drive a standard or not then there's a good chance it'll sell better.
It's already annoying enough seeing old ladies in WRXs though. There are tons of them around here. Most of them don't even realize that what they own.

Looks like it's going the way of the Vette

If it has an auto, it isn't a vette, IMHO.Sabre wrote:Libra Monkee wrote:I, for one, liked the fact that the STi didn't come in automatic. It kept certain wannabes from buying them.

Re: Impreza WRX STi - Now with 45% more automatic transmission!
What they SHOULD do is go the way of the 09 WRX. Where all WRX's are 5-speeds.. but if you give them an automatic they are rebadged as Subaru Impreza GT. I think we could be happy with a Subaru Impreza GT STi right? Kind of keeping the seperation right?
Hey I'm trying here!
In the defense of the auto. When I worked at Subaru one of the cars that I had the most fun driving when I was there was the automatic paddle-shift Legacy 3.0R. The response time was good and the rev matching was nice. It was a fun car. But Legacy != STi. There is definitely a difference in my mind.

I've had a lot of fun in some schweet automatics of late. So much so, I expect my next performance vehicle will have an automatic mode. So long as there is a manual mode and the shift-times are pretty quick.

Between the tech increases (and performance gains) in DSG transmissions and paddleshifters and the like... It's coming. It's the future of racing. It's the future of performance driving. It's the future of cars.legasleeper wrote:

I love my shifter and clutch pedal as much as I love driving. Times are changing. A bit bittersweet.

I wish this was out when I bought my STi. If its anything like the DSG in my GTI, I might trade in for it when I comes to America.

As a side note, the 5-speed manuauto in the Chevy Malibu is slushy and useless.
