Possible replacement for Xorg?? Mebbe.

Post by complacent »

Out of all the dev camps, the last place I was expecting a new X server was Red Hat.

The article's a pretty decent read, albeit pretty topical.

What say ye kernel haxxoring nerds? I'll admit, I like the kernel-mode ideas. And procs are getting bulky enough to handle it quite well.

But are the various *nix better off with a separate non-kernal-mode windowing system?

BTW, the project is called Wayland, you can read about it hmah.

To me, pushing it down that fair is just going to open deeper vulnerabilities... so someone figures out how to craft a JPG, that when it displays on your screen, hax0rs your box? There is no need to trust your windowing system to that level, and there is no perceivable performance benefit, so why?

We've already got Xsun and Xsgi. My guess is Xsun is going to be released under Sun's license, and Xsgi is going to have its guts ported into GPL since they mostly run teh leenucks these days. Although, strangely, I have an interview request from a place looking for an experienced IRIX admin (and how many of those are running around?!!).

I don't see a need to replace Xorg. If there's anywhere to focus on Xservers, it's in the goddamn hardware 3d support (and transparency, etc). There's no reason we need to use the nvidia drivers in emulation, or the ATI drivers in emulation, or reverse-engineer their cards. It would be nice if somebody (e.g., RHAT, SUNW, AAPL) would finance somebody building an open-source, modular interface that supported advanced video cards. One day we're going to hit 2gb cards (we're probably there; I live under a rock), and those coders are going to have to understand 64-bitness (and duhvelopers are bad at this), but it's just shameful that I can't install Kubuntu Intrepid with native nvidia drivers. It should work out of the box.

Instead they're fucking around with plasma. Give me a break. Writing a new Xserver? Puh-lease.
