2008 DCAWD AutoX class by Brian Garfield

Post by ElZorro »

Ok, so the 'tradition' continues! I'll be pulling together an AutoX class, run by Brian Garfield, again this year. Check out the previous threads to get an idea of whats going on:

2006
2005

And some pictures:

And the info at SCCA's website:

http://www.wdcr-scca.org/SoloAutocross/ ... fault.aspx

So, same sort of deal:
- Get together early (8am) at the site
- Brian talks, we prep cars, tech inspection
- Lots of driving, laughing and smiles!
- Lunch
- More driving!

What is different this year:
- We will be at FedEx Field (Ripkin is 'unavailable' due to city government issues apparently)
- It will be large enough to run two figure 8's (shortening the 'boring' part of the day), and possibly a 'drag strip' for practicing shifts, and possibly a skid pad
- Level 2/3, this means it would be good if you have some experience with AutoX (or a previous course)

So, the details:
- Friday, May 30th 2008, 8am to ~ 3pm
- Fedex Field
- 12 students
- $215/person
- We'll bring lunch in (we'll figure this out as we get closer)
- Money to Jason by March 28th (Cash, check, paypal (if you pay the fee))

Like past years, your spot isn't 'confirmed' until I get the cash, the class isn't confirmed until I get everyone's cash and get Brian paid (and he gets the site reserved with Fedex). Once you are confirmed you are responsible for finding a replacement for your spot if you can't make it. I know this is hard, in 2006 I had to cancel at the last minute and couldn't find a replacement, but the price per person is set based on filling the class.

If this class fills up and we have 'wait list' folks, I may organize a second class later on in the year. So if for some reason the timing doesn't work for you (Colin, Zak, etc) there may be a second chance.

So, shout out if you are interested, get me the bucks, and off we go!

Students:
1.) Jason - Forester XT - Novice - Paid
2.) Alan - WRX Wag - ?Moderate? - Paid
3.) Julian - STi - Engine blowing Expert - Paid
4.) Ben - STi - Novice - Paid
5.) Adam - WRX Wag - ?Novice? - Paid
6.) Jamie - Forester XT - ?Novice? - Paid
7.) Chuck III - STi - Moderate - Paid
8.) Gabe - WRX - ?Moderate? - Paid
9.) Andy - Civic - ?Expert? - Paid
10.) Chuck II - 2006 WRX - ?Novice? - Paid
11.) Colin - FXT - ?Novice? - Paid
12.) Laura - TBD - ?Novice? - Paid

Email from Brian on stuff for the class:
Brian wrote:We will be having a discussion and Q&A prior to driving. We'll then
run two drills in the morning with a full course in the afternoon.

The instructors for this school are Mike Stanley and Brian Garfield.

-GET PLENTY OF SLEEP THE NIGHT BEFORE.

-If you have regular street tires, make sure you air them up to at
least 5 psi above recommended pressures. There will not be a
compressor present, so please be self sufficient with air. (Note from Ben: I will have a compressor at the event, so if anyone needs to top off, see me.)

-Bring your helmet if you've got one, but we do have loaners. Helmets
must be SNELL approved, not simply DOT.

****The event is rain or shine, so be prepared for inclement weather,
PLEASE DRESS appropriately, you will be standing outside in whatever
weather we have.***

-If it's going to be hot, please bring plenty of water. (Note from Jason: I'll have two cases of water for 14 people, if you need more than a couple 3-4 bottles I'd consider gatorade) Remember that
you'll be standing on hot asphalt the whole day, so you can add about
10 degrees to the forecast... (Note from Jason: don't forget sunscreen!!)

-Bring good walking shoes and get plenty of rest, there will be a lot
of driving.
-Bring a chair to rest in.

******Arrive by 7:30am sharp.*******
The program will be over at 3pm.

Directions and a Parking Map for FedEx Field are here:
http://www.redskins.com/fedexfield/
**We will be driving on the H Lot.**

The longer it takes us to get the money in the more likely we are to have to reschedule due to Brian or the location becoming unavailable.

Have you done an HPDE or an AutoX class before?

My recommendation for anyone is they do an autox class first. The speeds are lower, the conditions are very controlled = much lower risk. You learn alot about timing, entering and exiting corners, throttle and break control, suspension, etc that are going to be easier (and more forgiving) to learn at lower speeds. First time I took the AutoX class I spun the Forester out, on the track that could have been an off, with wheel/tire/suspension damage, and depending on the track/corner contact with a barrier. Instead, Brian and I laughed our asses off.

Once you are comfortable with the skills then taking them to the HPDE and cranking it to 11 will be much more comfortable.

I've done both and Betty survived intact.

also: HPDE doesn't mean you have to crank it to 11.

Put Me/Jamie down. We'll probably just take the FXT and share the trip. Or she'll do it by herself with me as moral support.

Yeah? Well I don't remember you inviting any of us to Cars and Coffee or to any of the canyon runs...

Since I don't know what my travel schedule is, I'll have to wait and see if I can set an anchor date for this and tell work to deal with it.

This thing is gonna be huge, and no drive up/hotel the day before.
