GDC 2008: Emotiv's Brain Reading Headset

Post by Mr Kleen »

Emotiv's Brain Reading Headset
Shown in consumer form. We tried it out, and it's awesome.

February 21, 2008 - Almost exactly one year ago at GDC 2007, IGN Gear was treated to an exclusive closed door demonstration hosted by Emotiv, a previously shadowy corporation that had invested years in developing technologies for decoding brain waves and translating them to gaming. We were definitely impressed (read our impressions), and when we got word that the company was ready to show a finalized consumer version of the product at this year's GDC, we were stoked.

Today at GDC 2008, we met up with Emotiv to go hands (brain?)-on with the new gear Emotiv has officially dubbed the EPOC Neuroheadset. The device looks similar to prototype and beta versions we've seen before, but is now even more minimalist and sexy, in a highly futuristic sense. Emotiv was keen to point out that the consumer EPOC makes strides in the field of neuroheadsets in that its electrodes use a new and proprietary material that functions while dry, unlike most other electrodes that must be damp to sense brainwaves.

The other big news from Emotiv was, of course, details on price and release date. The company will release the EPOC before the end of 2008, priced at $299. Applications bundled with the release will include Expressiv, a cool chat client that leverages the ability of the EPOC to register complex facial expressions, including smiling, frowning, eyebrow movement, eye movement, winking, and other motions to allow for communications free from shorthand like lol and : ).

Not that it matters much but it is more accurate to say:
<Johnny_Mnemonic>Whoa</Johnny_Mnemonic>, not that there is any difference.

I just had to throw that in because this headset reminds me of the one in William Gibson's short story of the same name. They flucked it all up in the movie.

Also, remember the SQUIDS headset from Strange Days?

I wonder how accurate it is. This could definitely be interesting in other applications as well.

You mean to tell me that neo never uttered the word "whoa" the entire trilogy? I call BS.

And I'm very disappointed in myself for even bringing it up. :( Lame!

He did - after watching Morpheus leap from one building to another the first time he was put in the simulator. Yes, I know this.

Not to say that it wasn't uttered by Neo. I thought you were making a reference to Johny Mnemonic, (played by the same actor) because the movie also had thought reading headgear.

I read too much into your reply, I upped the geek factor too much.

Ahh, now I see! That was quite a well thought out response about teh headgear! I hadn't thought about it that way.

Damn, I really need to just stop typing in this thread. Nerd alert!

Speaking of headsets, woot today has a deal on the MyVue headset.

If you don't mind looking like a total 'tard, they are reviewed quite highly. May be of interest to those of you Apple whores...
