EEE PC

Post by Libra Monkee »

I just went ahead and ordered one. I think it might be fun to play around with and hack it. I didn't get the one with the webcam though. I figure for what I'll be doing with a webcam wouldn't be necessary. ;)

I've been considering one as well.

I think I'm going to hold out for the higher resolution model.

Or just suck it up and buy a 12" powerbook off ebay.

Decisions...

^^ I bet! I just can't justify another 1st gen apple product. They always seem to get it right the second time around. :(

Okay the EEE PC is a cool little machine. The Xandros Linux that it comes with is only good if all you're going to use it for is internet and OpenOffice. Beyond that it's pretty useless.

I put Shmoobuntu on it on Monday. It ran surprisingly well. I was able to install the wifi drivers on it from Madwifi and it worked great. The only hiccups were 1) When I did OS updates the SSD filled up and firefox wouldn't start. I'll be blame myself for only allocating 2.5GB to / . 2) When I power down the computer from the OS, it shuts down the OS but doesn't turn the power off on the computer itself. Why? I don't know yet.

I haven't been inside the thing yet but I just ordered 2GB RAM and a 8GB SDHC for it so I'll have to break into it when that gets here.

I acquired a copy Backtrack 3 (non-beta [no, it wasn't on bittorrent]) so now I'm in the process of trying to install that on the eeepc. It's harder than I thought it would be.

More details as they arrive.

No shutdown (no turn off) = acpi no working correctly. Make sure that it's enabled in the BIOS.

I grabbed the beta of BT3 and am playing with it now. Interesting some of the changes...

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.
