Oh god - now I can't remember if the turbo came with a new banjo bolt or not. This is going to bug me until I pull it...
I'm sure glad I don't know anybody with an FXT that has had turbocharger failures. Especially one that has just replaced the turbo for the (n-th) time... Oh Hi ElZorro!
What about turbochargers? Many people remain wary of boosted engines. Should they be?.. A couple of other cars, the 2007 Mazda CX-7 and the 2004 Subaru Forester XT, might be in the same ballpark, but the sample sizes are smaller so these could be flukes.. .. The Forester case has a known cause. Subaru included a “banjo” joint with a small oil filter in the line that lubricates the turbocharger’s bearing. Over time this small filter can clog, starving the bearing of oil. Some smart owners have preemptively removed the filter.
It is possible that the turbo oil supply mesh filter, which is located inside the banjo bolt that
secures the turbocharger oil supply pipe to the back of the right side cylinder head, may
become clogged thereby preventing oil supply to the turbo resulting in failure
Getting to the damned thing to check would almost be as easy as a turbo swap... Crap.
Patience is the ability to idle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears
