Gonna make a sticky thread for the Arduino stuff - I know a couple of us have picked them up recently.

Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. The microcontroller on the board is programmed using the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring) and the Arduino development environment (based on Processing). Arduino projects can be stand-alone or they can communicate with software running on a computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP).

The boards can be built by hand or purchased preassembled; the software can be downloaded for free. The hardware reference designs (CAD files) are available under an open-source license, you are free to adapt them to your needs.

So I've got the Getting Started with Arduino Kit (from MakerShed, http://www.makershed.com/Getting_Starte ... /msgsa.htm, comes with an Uno) and have run through the Getting Started on Arduino's website. Going fine so far. Not a fan of their IDE, guess I'm spoiled with full up IDEs with breakpoints and memory monitors.

i'm in the same boat. need to get some tools out of storage before i can start to play. looking forward to it for sure.

I was able to play with the kit without a single tool. I ordered the MakerShield (http://www.makershed.com/MakerShield_p/msms01.htm) and may not end up using it much if at all. More excited about the Ethernet Shield (http://arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoEthernetShield) I just ordered. I'm thinking some Shmoo-flavored fun is in order...

I'll probably be getting into this shortly. My girlfriend just picked up a pair of kittens, and I told her I could build automated feeders. The plan is to use the RFID to actuate the feeder once the cats get chipped by the vet.

Um, so a couple things come to mind. First, I've got a pile of Arduino stuff leftover from... a while ago. Everything required to build small aircraft except the servos. If anyone actually wants to, you know, build that kind of stuff, let me know. I'm always down for flight.

Also, there's the hackerspace in DC, HacDC: http://www.hacdc.org/. Thursday nights are microcontroller nights, and there is a substantial amount of geekery going on. There's also a mailing list that's relatively low-traffic if you care to follow along. Also, "geekery" is not a spelling error on the Mac. That's pretty funny.

Yea, HacDC is pretty good. They hosted a Shmoo party a couple years ago and had some pretty cool demos.
