Front o2 is stuck/sripped

Post by goob_os101 »

could not get the o2 sensor off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We were using a o2 socket too. I guess I could man handle it and buy a aftermarket front o2 sensor. Bosch 15537 Oxygen Sensor is under $110 and I am at 75,000 miles...

If you're at 75K, it would be cheap insurance. That sensor can be a real pain to remove.

I'm assuming you've already tried penetrating oil and/or heat?

I've also had varying degrees of success with an open end wrench.

Oddly enough, they either seem to come right off or are a total pain in the ass. (sorry you're the later). The biggest thing is to make suer that the angle you are attacking it with is the right one. Any slightly off one will cause havoc. I've tried several O2 pullers with varying degree's of success. Honestly, I would just try a different one to see if it's better. I take it the O2 didn't move at all?

I've found that unbolting the header tends to make it worse as you usually need to connection to the up pipe to properly apply torque to the sensor to get that bastard out of there.

I have had better luck with an open ended 22mm wrench and a breaker bar. (think that is the correct size)
I have stripped 2 o2 sensors, both times with my o2 wrench.

Agreed. The socket itself tends to flex under high torque.

Yeah, happened on my aftermarket DP install. Ended up playing brain surgeon w/ dremel and redid my threads. I got lucky. Very scary when you are far away from your home and another o2 sensor

As a terminal pack rat, I just happen to have a front O2 sensor laying around. If you bork up yours good, you can borrow it for use until you get a permanent replacement.

Two conditions:
1) Use anti-seize compound on the sensor threads when installing. (do not let compound to come in contact with the sensor tip)
2) Buy me beer at a meet.
Patience is the ability to idle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears

thanks for the offer, but luckly no damage was done and the o2 sensors works. I may just manhandle it and buy a denso...I have 75k so it close enough to replacing interval anyway
