transmission oil

Post by TRANS4M »

What are you guys using?

I'm getting a grind going into 5th gear once the car has warmed up. I figured I'll try a different oil to see if it helps my problem. I need to prolong this 5th gear synchro as long as I can.

A lot of folks have had good luck over the years with Uncle Scotty's Cocktail.

There's a ton of information in that thread. It ought to help nicely.

I didn't tell much difference between stock fluid and Royal Purple... Two different transmissions though with different synchros, so it is not an apple to apple comparo.

Either Uncle Scottys or Redline 75-90 lightweight gear oil (aka, Smurfs Blood) and you'll be good to go! Just a warning, you need a T70 Torx bit to change the oil yourself.

Changing the tranny fluid is super easy IF you have the right tools.

I use Redline Lightweight Shockproof (Smurf blood)...good stuff. I will either run 100% or run a 75%Smurf/25% redline regular synthetic gear oil.

I have been using the smurf blood in my subies now for 6 years...yes, I can tell the difference.

Any other odd tools I'll need besides the T70?

I would assume yours is pretty similar to mine if not identical for removal and refilling...best is to have a long tube with funnel for refilling the tranny (opening underneath the TMIC...opening where you check the tranny fluid) and the rear diff. For the rear diff, just pour until it overflows the top bolt filler/drain hole. Good to have ramps and jack stands or just jack stands (along with a level surface) and to have a big pan to hold the old fluid.
